Lets help each other out!
I have a challenge for you, next time you see someone on the side of the road holding a sign asking for money or food please give them some or at least go to a near by store and buy them some food or if you know of a place that is taking applications. It important to do this because of the horrible condition America is in thanks to the economy and the unemployment rate was the highest it has been in really really long time. Besides who knows they might have worked in a factory all their life and did honest days work every single day untill the day they got laid off, and their house foreclosed on and their car repossessed.
I was on my way to work this morning and as I turned on the road to go to McDonalds and I noticed to people on the side of the road who were dirty, obviously sun burnt from living outside, and had nothing but a blanket they were hunched over in holding a cardboard sign “please help” so as I was passing them again on my way to work I pulled over and gave them the majority of what I had in my wallet. You just never know their story.
In this economy we need to help each other, greed is what got us here in the first place.
If it were you, you would want people to help.

most people in this economic climate simply dont have any spare to give, it a nice thought though.
i give my old clothes and tv’s and such to the Hanna home all the time, money? don’t have any lol
Just wanted to say that you have a Golden Heart :) and it is nice to hear someone who is compassionate to the needs of other people who are suffering.
I think that the best way to help is if you have a little extra food or warm clothing to give them, or just speaking to them like a human with respect because they really can use it.
I would be very careful about some of the people who really are alright but pose as helpless to get a handout.
There are some great helping programs that train people to get jobs and get on there feet, and others that help with food, but these are not enough. Having even only a little to give goes a long way for someone who is facing this crisis, and gives hope to someone who is hopeless.
In SOUTH AFRICA there are people standing on every street corner, some of them muggers.Yes I agree we should help but not by just handing out money, there should be other ways,LIKE BUY THEM FIRST OF ALL SOMETHING TO EAT,then there should be community run organ. that we can direct them to,and we should also get involved with those organizations.
I spoke to a homeless man in Seattle when I was in the States last year, I was interested to see what his life was like, and if people actually helped him. In my country its a choice to be homeless, no one needs to be.
so i asked him how much he made from begging.
and he said, he easily made 30 grand a year. 3O GRAND A YEAR! all he did all day was sit around, and ask people for money. they were especially more likely to give in the winter, and near christmas and thanksgiving.
that guy made more than i do begging. no friggin WAY am i giving him my hard earned dosh.
I give to licensed charities and not to the people on the streets. Most if not all can get the help that they need at these charities. Some of these people have chosen this life style and have been doing it for years long before any of this economic situation happened. Hope this helps :-)
i think the worst thing you can do to a begger is to actually give him money… confused? simple, you are actually incouraging him/her that begging is good and you are actually rewarding him and telling him please keep on begging… when you dont give him/her money you are actually saying what you are doing is wrong…
max i think giving him/her a small something to eat… yet in my opinion even that is wrong… chinese quote ” give a poor man a fish and he will eat 2day, give a man a rod and he will eat everyday”

I think I’ve found my new career.
And that money isn’t taxed either.

Epic point…im so full of gory stories i know, so here another.
i lived in europe when i was 16. for a gal from NZ, where homelessness is virtually non existant, and always by choice, i was fairly culture shocked to my toes to see homeless people on the streets everywhere.
Imagine my excitement, coming from a 300 odd year old country, to go to Paris, and visit Notre Dame….OH THE HISTORY!
what i didnt bank on, was the literally tens of homeless people begging outside the gates, having to wade through their sad eyes to get inside.
I noticed a LOT of them were blind. like a disproportionate amount, especially the children. When i asked my host dad why that was, (he is a judge in germany), he told me that often, beggars will poke out the eyes of their children when they are babies, purposefully blind them in order to make them more “attractive” to people giving money away. It works. so they keep doing it. just like tricky said.
moral of the story: dont give beggars money. youre poking their babies eyes out

I saw that on Slumdog millionar. Very sad. If I were in a situation like that I would probably just snatch up the poor child and take him to an orphanage or somthing like that.
In america the vast majority do not choose to be homeless. Thats why I say we need to help them. I drove by McDonalds where I saw those people the other day and if they were there I was going to go buy them groceries and then go get them two applications for the factory I work at, but they werent there today.
Where I live, I have probably seen 5 different homeless people in my life. I live in a rural area and we havent been hit THAT hard by the economy, so I guess me seeing a homeless person tugs at my heart strings a bit harder then most folks since it is so rare for me.
yea, it makes me real sad too, seeing as i also havent seen much of it. I found a lot of people seemed really heartless toward them in the states and europe, and it made me mad till i found out why. but then, they could always get unemployment i spose.
Good for you Joy:) You are a great girl.

Well, I prefer the philosophy of give a man a fish you feed him for a day, teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime…
I prefer volunteer work as it helps those who want help and want to better themselves as well as gives a sense of satisfaction in helping others!
Yes Tricky I agree with that in the most part.
I’ve work with these issues and find they’re very challenging and complicated. I was being polite, but it isn’t really good to give them money. Here we give them coupons for meals and stuff. They earn them by doing work for the down town businesses:) Some just refuse and some suffer from mental illness. We also have a regular event every year to bring awareness, education and funding for a committee we have that assists. Our community leaders spend a night on the street rising funds for the cause:) It helps reduce crime, gets them off the street and educates others.
