Identify your skills

Figure out what problems people have that need your skills

Approach those people and pitch your business concept to determine their interest and willingness to pay you to solve their problem.

Refine your business concept, means of delivery, pricing. Use the people you approach to test drive your business and refer you to new customers.

Hi Thankyou :-) I have written business plans for loads of other people and I advise people all the time, people always come to me when they need help. But when it comes to me I just can’t seem to get anything off the ground just can’t figure out what to do. Do I want a shop or an internet business I need something that is going to be minimal cost to start

Instead of thinking shop or internet, focus on what kind of problems you like to fix with the skills you love to use. This will help you figure out what kind of business you would be good at and what kind of facilities are needed to do it.

The book “What color is your parachute?” by Richard Bolles goes through this process and has a chapter on starting your own business.

hi. i’d usually say start with identifying what you’re good at OR what you’re passionate about. but in many cases, what we are passionate about cannot be really translated to revenues lol.

so i guess another point you can address aside from your skills is this decision:

do i target an unfulfilled need OR do i ride a fast growing demand?

targeting an unfulfilled need doesn’t necessitate a BREAKTHROUGH (although it would be nice). it can be something soooo simple you’d be surprised you didn’t think of it sooner. walk around town and look at what people do, ask about their day, what bothers them, what are the bottlenecks in their day to day activity. talk to moms, students, etc. it’s just there waiting to be discovered. :)

riding fast growing demand tends to be temporary because a market demand will eventually be saturated. that is unless you are able to build your brand or innovate and product differentiate. in my opinion, this is easier to do. just think of something that a lot of people are into and do something to provide that service, hopefully in a more unique way. like when the power mac laptops are starting to fill the laptop market. with their expensive accessories, people clamor for cheap but pretty laptop bags. a bunch of college students started producing really chic laptop sleeves and sold them online - it was a hit (at least here in our country). and then a month later 10 more groups started selling them too, each original with their own designs.

after you’ve identified the business you want, come up with a BUSINESS PLAN. i’m sure you know this already and there are a lot of templates online. it shouldn’t be something too academic, just for you to put things into writing and have a reference later on. and eventually, when you decide to ask financing or support, it’s something you can readily show to other parties.

best of luck! :)
