Greetings readers of help.com,

I have been browsing this site from time to time, mainly out of curiosity. Delighted to see that the majority of people here are compassionate and of sound mind. Here’s my problem, maybe someone can offer me some advice.

I’m a 27 yr old guy, got a degree in business administration from a reputable university, worked as an IT professional for about a year. During that year, all my preconceptions about commerce/corporations/the honorable business field were blown apart. I was witness to sabotage between coworkers, lying, positioning, compromise on the right decision for political reasons, etc… I was so disturbed by all this that I quit my job and fell into a depression. Now, about a year after I quit, I am still unemployed and having a hard time finding work. Not only are companies not calling me for interviews, but I have a hard time sending my resume to many places when I read the job description. I get angry remembering my “professional” experiences. I don’t really want to work for a company anymore.

Please, give me some advice, what would you do in my situation? I am considering going back to school but would rather find a different option.

Hi there.

I’ve been there.

The only way to deal with this is to recognize all people are animals. They act based on their needs. EVERYONE is insecure. That insecurity leads to different behaviours based on the coping skills they learned while growing up.

When you realize this, you can work effectively with people by addressing their need to be respected and feel useful and not expecting them to act in any particular way because it is “right”. Yes, we are all rats in a cage. Best to understand why people act the way they do. You will become far more effective.

As for not getting a job… I’m in the same boat. But the way out is supposedly in “What colour is your parachute?” by Richard Bolles, an action plan that involves focusing on how the skills you love can solve problems you are interested in.

I highly recommend the book and the process. It supposedly has a 85% success rate vs 2% for resume submission.
