absolutly dependant on the enviroment
florida usa they will THRIVE untill a bug or critter comes in and NoMmS them away
kentucky as long as the pond is 5 foot deep and 8 foot long most gold fish will winter over in a pont frozen 10 inches deep
koi do better and carp are invincible
rule of thumb is the bigger the fish the bigger the pond
