life help: I am depressed. - Help.com

I am depressed.

I have worked very hard to get my masters degree….have been an intern the last 3.3 years……I was laid off January 09, and I still can not find a paying job. I am so distraught I keep making stupid mistakes…like to take my test for the second exam, I made it earlier instead of later so then I missed it. I am feeling worthless and going to my therapist isn’t helping……she means well….but what I need is a job to feel productive….I like being productive….

Hi there,
So sorry to hear about the job loss after working so hard going to school and all to be laid off is frustrating. It is hard not to equate one’s value with the job that you do, so not having it is like not having value. It is good that you are ready to get something else, but this has to be the worst time for a job search. I know my husband has been laid off about as long as you have and he has had some really tough times with his values as a man and his Job was who he was, he feels frustrated and lost too. Maybe while you are unemployed you can do something productive to help out people with the skills that you have, and you never know sometimes that ends up just like networking and all of a sudden someone knows of a job for you :) Good Luck Chin up.

Can you feel productive without getting paid???
Have you looked into any volunteer work? This sometimes leads into a real job but don’t go into it looking for that- just try it because you need something to do.
Doing something will make you feel productive and better about yourself. Helping others has an amazing way of helping you too. Just a thought, I’m not a counselor or PhD.

Hope this helps, gary
