Mrs.

Coretta Scott King, widow of Martin Luther King Jr., only lived 78 years, her death in 2005 seems premature since current figures for women in the U.S. is beyond 78. King’s parents lived to the ages of 99 and 91 (did not survive either parent by a full decade) and her siblings are 79 and 84 years old. Was it bad genes that reduced King’s lifespan below the average for U.S. women and below what seems to be a high average for her family?

The average life expectancy of someone born in the United Stated in 1900 was 47 years. The average life expectancy of someone born in the United Stated in 2005 is 77 years. If Mrs. Roosevelt died at the age of 78 years old, she did pretty good.

I’ve read somewhere that today’s children will be the first generation in history which is not expected to live as long as their parents. (Average) The theory goes that inactivity, and weight problems will reduce their life expectancy.

Genes play a big part in this, but so does lifestyle.

Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and Mrs. Coretta Scott King both died at only 78 years of age. To this day no definite cause of death has been determined for Roosevelt. I am curious though if it was miliary tuberculosis that she had could she have possibly lived longer? Her daughter, Mrs. Anna Halsted was very upset with physicians at Columbia Presbyterian in New York and said that her mother could have lived several years more. Its a shame that many of her contemporaries who seemingly had worse health such as Alice Longworth, Clementine Churchill lived far longer lives than Roosevelt. Sometimes quantity is more important than quality.

As for King who also only lived 78 years, her death in 2005 seems premature since current figures for women in the U.S. is beyond 78. King’s parents lived to the ages of 99 and 91 (did not survive either parent by a full decade) and her siblings are 79 and 84 years old. Was it bad genes that reduced King’s lifespan below the average?
