It’s just so weird, I mean, wasn’t he about to institute a surge in Afghanistan? Why’d he get it?

Nominations were due on February 1st, 11 days after he took office. What could he have possible done in those 11 days? And to overlook the achievements and sacrifices of so many human rights activists from China, Congo, and many other countries to award it to Obama is ridiculous. That is my main problem with it. It’s not about Obama - he didnt’ award it to himself. See the link below for an article by the San Francisco newspaper on those who were more deserving:

They gave Yasser Arafat Nobel Peace Prize for his life’s work as a terrorist leader; giving it to Obama for doing nothing is a step up not down for the Peace Prize comity.

Can you believe it? Gosh for what? I think their were others so much more deserving. WTF? Just shocked and disgusted. He does not belong in the company of previous award winners. It’s rediculous, he has not achieved a thing yet.

I honestly believe that he deserved that award…his courage alone and genuine concern for America gave it to him among other things of course!

Well yeah, but it’s not the Nobel “You Kick ***” prize. It’s for peace.

You have to look at everything he did before February, which is when he was nominated. His entire presidential platform was based on diplomacy, peace, and bringing responsibility back to the wars we started. Not to mention the fact that his election meant the world had one less reason to hate America and all the countries that look up to America. The prize isn’t always about accomplishments or specific actions, its about world peace. The only question that needs to be asked for why he got it is, “has Obama promoted world peace?” and perhaps more poignantly, “has anyone else done more for world peace?”

Seeing as the previous administration was warhappy, and he overthrew them so-to-speak, and the type of human rights/peace/dipolmacy stance he has brought back to the (arguably) most powerful/influential nation in the world, I can see how he won. Do I think he deserves it most? Maybe not, but its not all THAT surprising that he won. Personally I think Bill Clinton should have got it. If you can think of anyone else who deserves it more, I say post em up.

Name with no face,
I respect your argument, you do have to look at everything. But I truly do feel that most countries hate us now, much less look up to us. With all the issues going on, we look weak and non confrontational, with a weaker posture, I feel our allies support and respect is waning or gone! We have 13 million illegals here, and give them better support than our citizens, the middle class is disappearing, our dollar is in big trouble, so much so, other countries don’t want to use it! Many loosing it all and sleepless with no jobs. Oh I’m sure you know the rest. I feel he is destroying this country.

Has anyone else done more for world peace? is a good question, but certainly, then that opens a can of worms. Some feel Clinton, some Reagan, even Michale Jackson. So really to each his own on views and values. It would be nice if we all showed each other peace during this discussion. It would be appropriate. Peace to all that reply! Greeneyes

You really feel he is destroying this country? That is sad to hear, mostly becuase its unjustifiable, unless of course you want to further your assumption in saying the same of every progressive president in our history. They were all hated for the same reasons Obama is today. What destruction do you see? The fight to prevent 30-40,000 people from dying every year do to the lack of affordable health care? Attempts to end the disenfranchisement of a group of citizens perpetuated simply becuase their sole mates have the same body parts? The disdain, disregard, and in many cases outright hatred-(largely due to sheep syndrome ignorance) for half of the country that supports Obama and the policies he promotes? Obama’s international determination for the use of diplomacy to resolve world issues instead of rogue vigilantism? The call for a world without nuclear armaments? Obama’s stance against the complacency towards the use of torture and other rights violations (which we didn’t openly allow during WWII or the Cold War or any time until the past decade)? The recession that corruption and deregulation in the free market caused? And on that point, you can disagree with the overall effectiveness of the recovery, but to blame the current recession on Obama is like blaming the firefighters for the forest fire on the basis that its still burning, more so can’t put it out in the first day when everyone knows its going to burn for weeks.

Surely we need people who disagree with him. Without a debate no healthy system can survive. But to simply write off your opposition as absolutely destructive is the very nature of degradation our country now faces. But whats worse is when that is the entire platform your side of the debate fights on. Obama has time and again called for a middle ground to sought out. The problem being that the more the current party in power moves towards the the middle the more their opponents scream that the middle isn’t far enough.

And, most countries hate us? Hardly. I think you misread worldwide public opinion if you think Obama has done anything but help our image. The worldview of America was all but destroyed During previous administration, but even the Gop wasn’t the biggest factor. The real reason people don’t like America is primarily becuase of the citizens who are obese, ideologically backwards, morally hypocritical, religiously ignorant, intolerant, violent, unintelligent, and above all arrogant.

And about the illegal immigrants. What are you smoking? There is nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing in our laws that helps them in any way. If they are here illegally they are breaking the law, end of story. The only way they manage to live here is by circumventing the system (breaking the law) to remain undetected, and working harder and living with less than most Americans who whine about falling hard times instead of getting off their butts and doing something about it. Not to mention the fact that entering legally means you have to take a test the large majority of naturally born citizens couldn’t pass. The truth is that they are actually beneficial to our economy by producing more consumers, and many even pay taxes even though they can’t vote, or reap any of the benefits of citizenship without getting deported. I agree that we need less illegal immigrants but also think that it should be easier for them become legal citizens.

As for the other proposed recipients, I agree with Clinton, Reagen’s time has passed, and michael jackson’s a joke, Bono would have been a better celebrity throw in.

Obama has done very little for gay rights. Let’s not pretend he has.

Very little so far is true. He’s for letting them in the military though which would at least be a step in the right direction. And that’s in the face of the two steps back many of his opponents would like to take us. But mostly I was just calling out the topics I’ve heard the self proclaimed even-minded use to declare that Obama/liberalism(which becomes all his fault) is “destroying the nation.”

Even if all he accomplishes is “spewing rhetoric” on the subject, at least it’ll get the message out there with stronger force behind it. Martin Luther King Jr. had no allotted powers to actually enact civil rights, but his voice and efforts drove an entire movement. And that’s not to say Obama should be equated to King Jr. Its just that in any movement, a strong voice can be a very powerful tool to push things further, even if it can’t actually enact anything itself. I mean really, has there ever been a president sympathetic to gay rights in the past? It opens the door towards a better political climate for the change they are fighting for.

as someone outside of the US (really far away actually), i believe Obama has done more good than harm. on a personal side, rather more obliquely than directly. if he is lifting the morale of Americans and he indeed, then he is slowly pushing towards economic recovery. providing Americans hope equates to many economic advantages (consumer confidence and business confidence, foremost factors). but again, as an outsider these are just observations; lacking of actual experience.

however, i don’t think he deserves the award JUST YET. it seems he is given the award based on potential or promise, which in my personal i opinion i consider unfair.

and i hope for others posting here, please do consider non-Americans also. there are other very worthy candidates from different countries too. in the last ten years alone, recipients are from switzerland, south korea, ghana, iran, kenya, austria, egypt bangladesh, finland - in addition to the US.

Wasn’t there a poll done recently that found the United States is now the most admired country in the world? I’m pretty sure the founder of the Nation Brand Index said, “What’s really remarkable is that in all my years studying national reputation, I have never seen any country experience such a dramatic change in its standing as we see for the United States for 2009.”

(hurray, necroposting)
