Cancer help: I’m 16 years old and I just found out my nan has lung cancer that cannot be operated on. - Help.com

I’m 16 years old and I just found out my nan has lung cancer that cannot be operated on.

I went and saw her when she was in hospital and I feel so ashamed from my reaction to it. She was so thin, and there was a tube comming out of back draining fluid from her lung. I felt sick. I couldn’t stay in the room for long.

I feel like such a horrible grandaughter for how I reacted, for feeling sick when I saw her.

I’m worried about how I’ll react when she starts chemo, too. And when it gets worse.

I guess I want to know how other people deal with it, and how they get through stuff like this. At the mement I don’t know what I’m meant to do. Thank you in advance.

Sorry to hear your grandmother is ill…. But i'’m sure she understands your reaction to seeing her when she is so off colour.

Cancer is not nice, the treatments are not nice but you do get good days as well as bad… so try and visit her as much as possible.

Chances are she will not survive the illness even with treatment… blunt but true so it’s important you spend time with her while you can to avoid the awful feeling when she’s gone that you didn’t spend enough time with her.

Chemo has lots of affects on the body…. My nanna had throat cancer and all sorts of treatment and in all honesty there was very little we could do… but try and do whatever you can…. My nanna obviously lost the ability to eat, swallow, talk etc…. but she still had for a very long time the sense of taste… she couldn’t eat anything which was frustrating but we thought of all kinds of ways for her to still have the pleasure of taste without having anything in her mouth that she might accidently swallow and choke on….. flavoured icecubes… and we flavoured them with all sorts of weird and wacky things…. she also got a lot of pleasure from her hands being massaged gently….. and she loved the different lotions and oils we found for her…. it doesn’t have to be a lot that you do but try and do something nice for her… read to her if she’s too tired to read herself, etc.

At the moment the only thing you are meant to do is be a grand daughter to her…. worry about the rest of the stuff later.

I am so sorry hun.
I agree with anon above the massage thing is a good idea. She needs comfort from u, thats all u can do at the mo. Also photos next to her bed, the Nurses will comment and make her feel special. Does she have a pet? Make sure she gets updates on it if she does and pics of him.
I hope u r ok.
Axo

Dear 16 year old,

First of all it must feel tough to be so young and to have to see your nan go through something as ugly as cancer.

What you can do is tell your nan the reason why you find it hard to see her in this situation. Perhaps being honest with her will enable you to accept how she looks and what your nan will have to go through in the future.

Your not a horrible grandaughter for feeling like this your just being honest and human and its hard to see someone you love being ill or in discomfort. People’s automatic reaction when others are sick is to hide what they really feel or want to say. You can ask your gran how she feels about it; she might feel the same way as you and you might be able to help her; and in turn it may help you

If you feel that maybe I could help you further please feel free to email me ( i> small>(email removed) /small> /i>)
