The recession is killing us. - Help.com

The recession is killing us.

The Gov. claims it is over but not for people like me & my wife. We both have disability. We are trying to get by on 2 social security checks and the combined income puts us over the minimum for any kind of state help (welfare). Our local power company (LIPA) is a beast with teeth, our last bill was way too much so the put us on a budget payment plan which really doesn’t help. We have leaks in the bathroom and cant afford a plumber, my wife is deaf in her right ear and 80% in her left, we can only afford to fill the car gas tank but once a month and that gas has to last us for the month to get us to & from the store for food. So if anyone knows where we can find a free plumber, a pair of free hearing aids, or where we can find legit job’s working from home on the computer Im all ears. And as far as the recession being over, dont forget the disabled & the elderly, we are suffering dearly.

The recession is killing everyone except the rich ,I sent an e-mail to my state rep, about a month ago,He sent me a reply back that said he sent my cocerns to the head of the human services department,I never heard back from that man so i sent another e-mail to the state rep,He had me blocked and i could not send it,So i understand when you say you cant get help.I have a disability but have been turned down twice ,My wife is very ill and our bills keep coming,This may sound harsh but the reality is that we must rely on our selfs ,The goverment dosnt care and there isnt that much help out their if you make just enough to juggle your bills but not really live but you dont make enough to survive,I wish i could help alot of people ,It kills me to see so many in poverty and sick ,Having to choose between food or meds,Some of us dont even have a choice we cant get either,The only thing i can say is try your local churces and food banks,Prayer is still a powerful tool and GOD still loves us even if it seems at times like he isnt even listing,He is,

Selling stuff may be good for some quick cash for a plumber etc. Sell your computer, I know its fun but its not a necessity and you can always visit a library or something to occasionally use it.

Also, I’ve not heard that the recession is over…

I will pray for you. I have to work and even in my profession, the recession hurts badly. I hurt badly doing what I do because it is so physical.Cannot afford the anti-inflammatories that give me a little relief from the pain. It is a mess. God is listening, but sometimes we all feel like He is not. He is, it is hard to keep the faith when you don’t have food and gas and electricity. I have cracked my bottom crowns clenching my jaw. I just have to know that their will be relief soon and divine intervention for everybody. Faith is about all I can be sure of at this time.

O_o youre on social security. that is a guaranteed cheque every week or month or whatever it is. you just need to learn to live within your means, and cut out what you cannot afford.
plenty of people arent getting ANY income whatsoever.
if your wife is disabled you should be able to apply for disability.
the recession is biting everyone in the ***

Thank for the suggestions, cant sell the computer, it’s old and we wouldnt get much for it, you missed the part that we are both with disability, getting to & from the library just to use the PC would take a lot out of us, besides we would like to find work where we can work from home on the computer. So the computer is not fun for us it’s a way to make money, I hope.

Thanks for the reply, But Im cofused, my wife can not apply for disability she and I are both disabled and both on SSDI so how can we apply for something we are already on? You even acknowledged that in you opening. And your right that there are folks not getting any income at all so what are we suppose to feel lucky that we have disabilities that force us to be homebound? Im sorry but as much as I feel sorry for everyone who is without income and I do pray for them. I pray they are at least looking for work and not sitting on there buts, they at least have there health and can be out there looking for work. And even tho my wife and I are disabled at least we are looking for a way to better ourselves by looking to work from home. So I think you misunderstood my post, Im not asking for anyone to feel sorry for us, Im asking for help finding legit work from home jobs, isn’t that what this forum is for? Help? Ideas? Advise? Your advise is to cut out what we cant afford, well we cant afford the mortgage, the electric & phone bill, food, gas for the car to get the food, shoes & cloths, so what do we do? Live in a nudest camp? Eat berries & hunt small animal’s with sticks & clubs? We are not living beyond our means, we use to be able to afford everything on what we make, but the recession has changed all that, the cost of living has gone up faster then our income so we are seeking work. I get the impression from your statement that you feel we are begging or seeking sympathy, wrong we need ideas of ways to work from home on our PC.

Could you start a home shop? For very similar reasons my dad had to do the same thing. He has a knowledge of computer building so he bought loads of parts and started building computers and selling them. Now he sells all sorts of rubbish! He buys and sells basically all through ebay. I don’t know if that would work for you but its definately a suggestion.

Or could you or your wife become a childminder?

im not american, i dont know what every single different government benefit means.
yes, you could cut DOWN the electricity bill, pretty much every household uses more electricity than they really need to.
do you leave things on standby rather than turn then off at the wall? leave lights on when youre out of the room? turn the oven off at the main? what is your hot water cylinder set at?
all of those things can save you money.
shop second hand for clothes and shoes, and yes, eating home grown food is a fantastic way to save money.
see! youve come up with plenty of ideas on your own :)

Good advice, I have thought of fixing tv’s (Im retired tv repair man) in my house, however the county still wants me to have the license which cost too much for such a small venture. Being a babysitter is not a good idea, our health is not good and if there should be an emergency with either of us or the child would be a huge problem. Thanks for your input.

Believe me I have tried most of what you mention, we almost live in the dark yet the electric bill is through the roof because of the heat, we have electric heat that we must have due to our health, the growing veggies idea is out as we have no land & besides winter is setting in now. Hot water must be at hot also because of health issues. We already do shop for 2ed hand cloths. Believe me we have cut down beyond human standards and yet we are left with pennies after paying bills. Thanks for your input

But wont they freez? I never heard of any grant for electric but I will look into it. We did have new windows & front door put in for free from the LICDC, but I think it is too soon to apply for anything else just yet. Thanks!

na, you can plant things like cauliflower and broccoli over the winter, which is their main growth period, and theyll flower in spring. if you grow em inside in the warm though, theyll grow throughout winter too, you might just get smaller heads on em

Thats an idea - here in the UK disabled or retired people get a “winter grant” or a “heating grant” in the winter to help with heating and food, I don’t know if the US has that but its definately an idea.

Also, look into resources your local council has to offer, they may have grants or help for people who start their own home business. Its part of a scheme they made up because of the recession to get people to become self employed. You never know maybe they will pay for your licence?

It may be an idea to set up a website offering any services you can do - general DIY things etc. There must be a market out there for that kind of stuff. I mean single or busy parents want stuff setting up and would rather pay other people to do it. Decorating etc is popular.

Just don’t give up, remember - ANY skill you have is useful and could be useful to someone.
