If you do not do graphics, no point in spending the extra money on the Mac in my opinion. Although PC’s handle graphics programs just as well. HP is better than Dell and I don’t know about the Toshiba although I have been impressed with Toshiba labtops. I would compare HP and Toshiba and get a warranty. They are so cheap versus the repair bills of laptops.

Make sure as a minimum you have a dual core processor, and 2GB, if not 3GB or 4GB if you can afford it or RAM. That way it should also be fairly future-proofed for the time being as well as running smoothly.

It really depends on what you do at school and what your budget is. If you are into graphics, an IBM or Mac computer is probably not the best option. If you need to store lots of files, a would need at least a 500 GB hard drive, and whatever you need the computer for, the more RAM, the better. If your not into Gaming, don’t bother with alien-ware. HP has different computers for different needs, and so does Dell, so i suggest looking at their websites. The number of inches screen goes diagonally, so just be aware of that.
