Im converting .avi files to mp4 files is the size supposed to be smaller after.

I have several movies in avi format between 700mb and 2gb, but they wont all fit on my ipod touch.
So I am converting them to mp4 as someone told me the file size shrinks by more than half.
It hasn’t, have i done something wrong? Or was I lied to?

you weren’t lied to - it’s all about compression settings.

i can make avi files half the size of yours, but with half the quality. same goes for mp4 files.

finding a balance between quality and filesize is the name of the game.

jamesbabi obviously has no idea what he’s talking about lol so just ignore him ;)

The files i converted haven’t gotten smaller some of them actually got bigger I’m using DVDVideoSoft Free Studio and I also tried http://www.convertavitomp4.com/ that didn’t shrink them either.
Is there better software that even an idiot could use successfully?

film files of any type all use different codecs and compressions tools to make them the size they are. MP4 generally seems to be larger in size than AVI because of the type of codecs used. I think the standard is the H.264 codec used, which is usally known for very high quality videos. If you wanna shrink a video, then consider setting the sound quality and video quality to almost terrible and set the size to around 320×240px (QVGA)and it should perhaps shrink it. alternatively, just use the save codec used in the AVI file and just turn the quality, sound and size settings to aroun the same size and it should work just fine - you don’t really need to worry to be honest about turning them settings down, as its so small anyways, you’re not loosing much in overal watchable quality.
