How to survive after leaving home (right after I turn 18)?
I want to leave home as soon as I turn 18. The constant screaming and fighting, unreasonable restrictions, it just won’t stop… And family counseling isn’t an option.
I have a job (get about $400 a month counting expenses), and already have a little over $1000 in savings — an unknown amount in my college fund (my parents won’t tell me). I have about 1 1/4 year to save. However, I still am not confident that this is enough for me to survive. Can anyone (hopefully someone who can understand my situation) give me advice on how to increase my income and/or how to save on expenses effectively? I do not plan on getting insurance (which I know is bad, but it’s impossible for me to afford, even if I were to wait to leave until after college), a car, or credit card.
Please, any advice is appreciated!
EDIT: I should note that the expenses I was talking about from my $400 a month are CURRENT expenses. It does not include rent, food, or anything else. Sorry for any confusion!

Where were you?
You can also watch events on Help.com as they happen
look into low income housing that will help a ton but on top of that you need to find a better job or develop yourself so that you can increase your earning potential when i was your age i am assuming 16 i made about 1500 a month so it is possible
Tough situation. Maybe you can qualify to get HUD housing/food stamps?
I see you are planning to go to college. So do you turn 18 during your senior year in HS? And you just want to live on your own until you are able to go to college?

Living at home takes care of most expenditures a person would need. Electricity, food, heating, water, internet. Dedicate yourself to spending no money at all.
Yes, Pepper Jelly, that is correct. I will probably be living on my own for about 6 or 7 months before college, and obviously during and after college (but with the room and board it will probably be cheaper, plus no transportation expenses).
also find some same age friends do the roommate thing
I have created a budget for myself, Ikari, but I feel it is too tight. I will not be able to put anything in savings at all during those 6/7 months on my own, and I need to constantly be saving something. I don’t know how to fix this.
Try for HUD housing.
How bad is it at your house? Like the Commander said, it is much more practical to stay home for as long as you can. Though I can understand a decision to leave, as well.
As you get older/become a better and more reliable, resposible employee, you should be able to make a little more money.
When you are in college, the only way to go would be either to get studetn loans to live off of; or to work and go to college PT….pick an inexpensive college.

What do you spend your money on?
The college I want to go to is $23,000 a year.. not bad but not good. Also I will be switching jobs this summer because I need training in a certain area before I can go to this college (I’m hoping I’ll earn more than I currently do).
One more BIG THING: I go to a private school. My parents pay in full in advance, so by the time I move out I won’t have to worry about paying the school. My question is, though, do you think that they can or will pull me out of the school when I move out, even though they’ve already paid everything and I’ll already be in the third quarter of the school year? I’m scared they might, even though it’s unreasonable since they can’t get any money back… Should I maybe wait until right after I graduate? I really DON’T want to wait. If you lived here you’d understand…
Only you know what your parents will do….
Sounds like your parents are looking out for your best interests, though.
Not everyone (a small percentage of ppl, actually) have college funds for their kids; and even less ppl send their kids to private school
you should try sitting down and talking to your parents and or writing them a note explaining your feelings
TO IKARI:
I spend money on food, water, electricity, internet access, cell phone, personal care, and transportation (most likely a bus, but if I get a place close enough to my school than I can just walk and this won’t be a problem). I have found the cheapest deals possible, besides make-up, but I only use foundation and the price is not bad at all.
Whoops, that’s me above.
When I lived on my own in HS, I did not have a phone or a computer…ya’ gotta do what ya’ gotta do to cut expenses if it’s what you really want
I also ate a lot of cheap food (Ramen, etc)
I’m not saying they don’t care, but they’re extremely dictatorial. The fighting is ridiculous (and note that I’m not usually the one fighting — I have very good control of my temper, unlike most of the people in my house), and I feel like I’m suffocating under their strict rule.
Talking doesn’t do much with them… They’re also very manipulative, and twist things around so it’s never their fault/resposibility (I’m not saying I haven’t screwed up, but they all too often deflect blame that is rightfully theirs)..
Who fights with whom?
If they are dictatorial, just think of it as typical…so many kids think that of their parents. You will be out on your own soon enough, and once you ARE on your own, you will have to spend the rest of your life taking care of yourself. The rest of your life is an awful long time compared to 18 years, most of which you don’t even remember….
What sorts of things happen that they point the proverbial finger at you rather than at themselves?
The cell phone and computer I already have (most stuff from saving, everthing else as my christmas gift), so the base price is not included. Cost per month is also not that bad: about $60-$75 total.
Note that this isn’t really a sign of caring… More of a way that they try to buy me off. They use the things they get me as an excuse for why I should obey their every command (I “owe” them). I’m not saying I don’t appreciate all I have (I’m very grateful that I have as much as I do), but I didn’t ASK for all these expensive things… I shouldn’t “owe” them my soul.
I understand that. But, maybe you should just give it some more more so that you will be better prepared when you ARE on your own
I’m not exaggerating when I say they’re dictatorial (they’re type “A” helicopter parents). I’m not allowed to do anything or go anywhere, even though I live in probably one of the safest towns in America, and I constantly get screamed at for ridiculous things.
What they accuse me of… urgh, it’s hard to think of something SPECIFIC. Little things like I don’t tell them my plans (which I make a point of to do, usually 3 or more days in advance), but far more serious things as well… Even other adults, ones who are also fairly restrictive, are shocked by the tight reins my parents have on me.
I can’t give it more time… the pressure is too great… I am NOT one who overeacts. I’m also no drama queen. I don’t have fits when my parents tell me I can’t go to the movies or ask me to do a few chores. It’s just… IMPOSSIBLE here. I sometimes cry it’s so bad. I wish someone would just knock on my door and tell me I’m adopted or something and take me away. I NEED TO MOVE OUT ASAP.
Hi just thought I might suggest to you a way to live rent free, in a nice home with food and all expenses which could include a vehicle, is to be a live-in Nanny for wealthy families. I did it when I was young and it was the best thing for me at the time. Look into it because you can work a schedule around your schooling and have no expenses plus whatever wages you manage to work out, you just need to create a contract ahead of time as to what you want to do (details) and what they need.
Monomi I hope that you will consider seriously working as a live-in Nanny it will quickly solve all the problems you are dealing with and you could do it as long or short as you wanted. I understand your situation, I had to live like that too when I was your age, it is crazy and the sooner you get away from it the better.
p.s. I would adopt you :) Hope that makes you smile.
Thank you, agaperoot! I will look into it. :)
You are welcome :)
Agaperoot has a good idea, Monomi.
Sorry I had to leave for a little while.

Try looking through the rooms/shares section of craiglist to find people looking for roomates or housemates for really cheap or consider moving into a friend’s house which is what I did one summer and it was enough for me to cool down with my parents but yeah there is a lot of shared housing and you would most definitely qualify for food stamps. As for the college money…its only useful if your parents won’t use it as leverage to get you to do what they want…waayyyy too many parents do that and if they do its just safer on your sanity to go with government grants to pay for school.
