What is the best colour for a wall colour?

I just moved into my new house today. It’s pretty big for just starting out. However, i don’t know what colour i should colour the walls. Is there a specific colour that looks good with any room, or does it depend on the things in the room or just what the room’s purpose is (livingroom, kitchen, bedroom)? Any and all help will help so thanks to all of you who respond.

good idea. i hear that green is sort of a relaxing colour, so if i end up having kids that will help calm them down because i hear kids these days are real rascals.

Yes I believe it depends on what colors will be in the room. But I think it would be good to do a neutral color that matches with everything. Like white. You can always change the surrounding and not have to paint the room when you get new furniture.

Tell me about it.
I’m babysitting two horrors.
It’s 1030 and they still haven’t gone to sleep.
They eat like crazy insane!
It’s amazing!
I don’t understand where it all goes!

that’s gotta suck. I never really had that problem when i was babysitting. I mean, half the girls i was sitting had a crush on me, that might have influenced it, but in my years of babysitting, i can never recall once that the kids behaved badly. I must just be lucky or something…

Some paint looks different at store, maybe get some little samples and put them up to see what you like. Color affects your mood too, so it depends on th room and what you use it for. Green is good calm color and you can look at all the shades to find what you like. The blue-gray color is really nice and is not hard to live with. I like warm colors mostly, like suede or butter yellows and golden tones. Have fun with the selection, good luck.

Suede? I’ll have to look up what that exactly is…. Sorry, i’m a guy, i’m not exactly a memorizer of colours. Thanks for your ideas though, i’ll put some thought into everything everyone has replied on at this post. Thanks all. Don’t anyone reading this be afraid to leave another reply though, all ideas are good ideas (unless they’re bad ideas).

Home Depot has a section at their website that will colorize rooms for you. If you are unsure then look into the Earth Colors. Like Taupe looks good with Black and white accessories. Gold looks good with greens and even dark blues. A gray/blue color for the walls looks good with tan colors.

Once a person starts with a color that is pleasing to them the rest of it just falls in naturally. Look at colors as though they have a meaning to you…whether it’s to relax, feel energetic, feel spiritual, etc. Some people have painted their rooms a red because they wanted a feel of royalty. They leave the woodwork white and then incorporate a black and white material design for the windows.

There is a lot of information out there.

My house is gold walls and with a blue rug in the dining room. The front room is Faux walls with tan and light gold, gold leather couches, dark green area rug. The Sun Room or Reading Room is gold on the walls and sage green and beige swag draperies and an ivory rug on the floor. My tables, woodwork and dining room set are all dark wood.

So all together the three rooms are centered around gold, dark green, sage, beige and light blue.

There are a few shows on cable TV one is on HGTV that design rooms and they are on everyday. Also there is a lot of info at the library on room design. Good luck.

First of all, paint is a relatively cheap and easy way to spruce up your house. So go with your gut at first and then if you don’t like it, it’s not a big deal to redo it.

If you have a sofa or a throw rug or a lamp that you really love the colors of, try to match one of the less prominent ones.

I have a throw rug with ‘heritage reds,’ browns, greens, and oranges in it…completely “autumn looking.” I painted my dining room the same shade of tan that is in the rug and then made one wall the ‘heritage red’ color. I used ‘rustic’ furniture and got a great big ‘distressed’ clock to hang on the wall. I got some of those square shelves from Bed Bath and Beyond and put some little knick knacks in them to match the whole thing. I also found a GREAT painting at a yard sale!!

The tan color of the dining room walls flows into the kitchen walls (I have an open floor plan). But in addition, I added greens as accent colors to my kitchen. Green on the sliding glass door and at the windows. Green vases on top of the cabinets. I use the same rug under my kitchen table as the one under my dining table, but a smaller version.

The formal living room is just off the kitchen and it’s also open. The walls in it are dark green, which makes the room look smaller, but it is also a very relaxing room. I hung a curtain at the window that is tan with really light orange and ‘heritage red.’ On my fireplace mantle, I have a flower vase with lots of orange and green. My sofa has some green in it, but not too much b/c then the color would be overwhelming. Of course all of these shades of green, red, tan, and orange match each other throughout each of the rooms, so it pulls it all together.

It looks great and I love my house :)
