Is Halo Custom Edition Portable free?

I got it from a friend at school (we play it during lunch). I know that the non-portable version of Custom Edition allows you to make new maps and such (and that it requires a copy of Halo: Combat Evolved for the PC to run). I figured that it was all right since I couldn’t make maps and it’s multiplayer only, but I’m still a little unsure as to whether me getting it free of cost is legal.

I get games all the time free of cost, sims 1-3, all of the adobe products, fallout 1-2, oblivion, mass effect, risen, ghost master, and many many more.
