computer help: Windows XP cannot reboot in safemode and system restore cannot be used. - Help.com

Windows XP cannot reboot in safemode and system restore cannot be used.

Trying to repair an old laptop. When log-on is complete a series of failed programs appear “HP Wireless Assistant could not be supported on this device” ect. Neither the Taskbar or start menu are present or can be displayed.

The computer cannot use system restore “system restore cannot protect your computer at this time. Please restart the computer and try again.” With the same message even after restarting.

And finally the computer cannot be started in any form of safemode… I don’t have the XP disk anymore, so I cannot reboot from it, plus I am trying to obtain data from the laptop. Any ideas?

Did you try “last now good configuration”? You can find this option if you keep pressing F8 after the Bios screen.
You can try to download (torrent but verify hash) a XP installation cd and recover your XP serial by using keyfinder, google for jellybean and get the software from jellybean site. It can show you XP serial and also other apps like office 2k3, 2k7 etc.

If you fail to repair windows and you need to reinstall the OS than you can do it with Linux, I don’t know so much about it but I think ubuntu or so has some tool which you can put on a cd or usb key and boot from it so it’ll allow you to see the content of your harddrive.
google for: “how to recover data from XP with ubuntu” or got to:

In case of virus, go to eset.com and download the trial for nod32. Make sure to select 32 or 64-bit according to your operating system.

Have you tried starting with “last known working configuration”? there was this option in the XP boot menu was it not?

You mentioned HP software, look for a HP program which can reset to factory defaults but be sure to back up ALL the data you wish to keep.
As an alternative you can download and boot from a Linux disc to access your data if you can’t access them in Windows, I recommend Ubuntu or Fedora. Google Ubuntu and/or Fedora forums for assistance with using them.
