Lack of excitement. - Help.com

Lack of excitement.

Yeah, like it says; I’m 18, and I can’t recall a single exciting moment from the past 5 years of my life. I try to think of things to do, but I draw a blank, mostly because I don’t want to do things alone.

I’ve had a lot of trouble convincing myself I’m not a boring person. I realized interesting people are interesting because of their life experiences. Ever met a boring person who backpacked across Europe? Didn’t think so.

I just want to get in my car and drive north for as long as I feel like… It’s not like I couldn’t; I could leave right now. I have the money, a good car, and really no responsibility, but it feels stupid doing it alone.

Any ideas? I feel like a jackass for asking this, just so you know.

Take a trip. Go to somewhere like Vegas and have some fun. Live life, because it only lasts so long. It’s gone in a flash. Why would you have to do things alone?

Vegas? Legal gambling age in Nevada is 21. I see where you’re coming from though.

I would have to do things alone because I don’t have any… what do you call them?… oh yeah, friends.

There’s a lot more in Vegas than gambling, my friend.

What about family? you’ve gotta have someone.

The only thing I’ve ever heard of that made me say “Holy ****, I HAVE to do that”, is amateur storm chasing; but there are only so many days that’s a possibility.

Then I watched “Into the Wild.”. That movie changed my perspective on a lot of things. Like I said, the thought of jumping into my car right now, almost midnight, and just driving as far as I can gives me butterflies in my stomach; Yes, just the thought physically excites me. But I would want to share the experience.

I got my acceptance letter for college today. I will be working towards a computer science degree, but it doesn’t excite me unfortunately. It was kinda like “Well, I’m not good at anything else, so I might as well do this.”.

Into the wild is amazing and I cry everytime! Book is excellent too. Couldnt a degree in computers help with storm chasing? Being like Dusty on “Twister” he did all the computer stuff. And you are young, whether you feel that way or not. And more things will open your eyes if you are open to it. Go to college and see what happens!

you know, in college it’s hard not to make friends. And if you start making friends, and then you can hang out with them, have some college parties etc. If that doesn’t get your blood flowing, I don’t know what will, heh

I try to keep reminding myself that things will get better in college, but I read stories every day on other sites I visit, of how they slipped through the cracks and are as lonely as they were before they entered.

I have a tenancy to just keep my mouth shut at all times, people don’t like this, and usually avoid me because I seem unapproachable. I’ve been trying to work on this, but I feel like once I’m back in the classroom setting, I will revert back to my old ways.

The thought of being alone is the only thing that scares me anymore. Well, that and sharks.

Just because you read about other people feeling the same doesn’t mean that the same will apply for you. As for being outgoing, all you really need to do is just say “**** it! I’m done with this!” talk to some people, and you’re home free! Something that I found works really well to get to know people is ask questions. It takes the pressure off of you for a while.
Oh, and sharks scare me too dude lol
But I know how you feel. I’m really sheltered and there was a point in time that for about 4 years, I didn’t have anybody. I didn’t go anywhere, I didn’t talk to people, I didn’t even try. I just gave up, but it wasn’t getting me anywhere. So I just started actually talking to people, and now I’m a lot more social. It only takes a few simple words to start a conversation, and it only takes one or two conversations to make a friend. I’ve added you as a friend, and I hope you’ll accept :)

THEN the excitement starts.

i personally think you complain too much but do nothing about it. you like making excuses.

how about just DECIDING to do SOMETHING about it. and not feeling sorry for yourself most of the time. it sounds mean, i’m sorry. but it’s not what i’m trying to be. you really seriously can’t get an ‘exciting’ life if you refuse to do anything. ‘reverting back to my old ways’, ‘tendency to keep my mouth shut’, those are excuses my dear. if you want to do something just DO it, saying it aloud is not the same.

i’m sorry if it sounds mean. but i hope you get my point. :)

I think i pretty much feel the exact same way about school. Getting accepted, doing transcripts, picking classes and so forth can really wear someone out. The trick is to manage all this. If you can wake up, knock out your job and then spend an hour or 2 on side task, it might be more manageable for ya.

Dude, that sleep problem wont go away unless you settle it with yourself. Ive had nights where i wasnt able to get to sleep period. Get up at 530, work till 530 pm, go to school at 600pm till 8 and then stayed awake doing homework and being pissed at my bosses for being complete idiots. Repeat the next day. It’s not fun and you’ve gotta learn to let things go.

I love your photograph, and just remember there’s a lot of excitement and lots of adventures to be had when you set off on your own! People to meet, things to see. You will make friends once you’re out there! You would drive north from where? The north is always beckoning. But then, so is the south, in a different way.

From Texas. I’ve been out of the state once since I was 2. I would go south, the weather would be nicer, but I figure I should start off in a direction where they speak my language. Plus, I’m kinda fond of the idea of traveling the US highway and interstate system.

I’ve kinda been doing this already. On my days off I’ll drive to a town I’ve never been to before, usually only 30 minutes or so away. Problem is, once I get there, I have no idea what to do, I end up just driving around looking for good parks, or views of bodies of water; I’ve yet to find any worth going back for.
(BTW, if you ever want to feel like you have an entire town to yourself, go to Slaton, TX at 4 in the morning on a weekday. I was there for 2 hours and saw a grand total of one other driver the entire time.)

@OceanCold. I do have a cheapish DSLR like camera, been trying to save up for a real dslr; I just don’t have the money, even the “cheap” ones are upwards of $1k.

when you drive to those towns, stay a couple of days. walk around. you miss so much driving. i freakin love going on epic long drives to random places in the middle of nowhere, then staying for a couple of days and just wandering around. youd be amazed at how much you can find in even the smallest town. wander into shops-the old doods running the antique stores always have a good story.
i was in the states last year and spent a bit of time driving to some random ghost towns in Nevada, that was pretty freakin rad. if you want excitement, try breaking into the old goldfield hotel at 3am-supposedly the most haunted hotel in america. thats more the ****-your-pants-omg-im-gonna-die kinda excitement though…

Nikon d40 can be found real cheap, and it rocks, it has recieved awards and all… http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=niko… just one link. Here you got a review by Ken Rockwell http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm

It’s a good choice, but if you don’t like it you could buy canon… http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/rebe…

Else, buy analog slr really cheap! just be ready to spend a lot in film, but still… cheap glasses ;)

just a thought! hope it helps XD

Problem with this is all the towns are boring, except Austin, which is probably where you are … and even Austin can be incredibly boring.

Yes, it will hold. It’s an incredible lens for it’s price, better than the canon one with the same range. It will give wide and normal objectives with really good quality… probably the only lens you’ll ever need. It’s fast, low image distortion, lovely to put it in short terms. Look it up here http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-5…

You’ll feel incomplete with it if you want to shoot telephoto. Let’s say you are shooting a bird/a flower/a situation from a long distance; you’ll need a telephoto zoom. Or you could just like the way telephoto distorts the back ground and exposes what you are shooting. You could then get a second lens for $230 or less: the nikkor 55-200mm VR. VR means that the image won’t be shaky when you take a picture (it stands for vibration reduction: VR) here you got a link http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/55-2…

With this 2 really light-weighted lense you can go of the road without worries and take photos that could even win awards. I’ts all about capturing the right moment, and with this 2 you got it! If you feel like NEVER IN YOUR LIFE TIME HAVING TO BUY ANOTHER LENS or NEVER CHANGING LENSES!!! here you go the nikkor 18-200mm VR http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/1820… But! get ready to spend serious money for this one ($900 tops) and it’s definitely heavier than the other 2.

You’ll only need other lenses if you’re a shooting for the money, but if you are a “capture it whenever wherever” freak like I am, this is all you’ll ever need.
