Most Psych Majors end up in academia, going for a Ph.D and conducting research/teaching courses. The next most common path is clinical, conducting therapy often in their own private practice. In the public sector, many are employed in advertising and public relations (advertising as a study was actually founded by a Psychologist). Also, many companies employ Psychologists for the optimization of Industrial Organization.

Defining questions would be:
Do you intend to keep studying throughout your life, or will you be done with school after your degree?
Do you want to treat persons one on one?
Do you want to be involved in research or treatment?
Are you more interested in corporate work than in research or treatment?

Therapists make the most money, however some recent studies show that it is doubtful that they have any real value to their patients. Professors make the next best wage, but have to stay active in studying throughout life and are expected to conduct and publish research. Industrial/Organizational Psychologists and Psychologists who go into Advertising make less, but are not required to keep on the cutting edge or contribute to expanding the body of knowledge.

well, obviously first you need to do a bachelors in psychology, which is 3-4 years depending on where you are and which country youre studying in.
after youve done your bachelors, you will need to do either honours or masters to be able to practise in psychology specifically, a bachelors does not make you a qualified psychologist.
however it will allow you to get a job in pretty much any industry working with people.

Typically with a psych degee, you can’t get a real good job unless you have at least a Master’s Degree or higher

when you do your masters or Phd, you will gain experience anyways, through placements. they wont just let you loose on people with no experience. it will be hard to gain employment in the field without the qualifications.

look into any exchange programmes your university has with other unis or colleges, most have programmes where you can study overseas for a while.

Well respected Psychology programs exist in Germany, Austria, the UK, the US, and Japan. There are many many others as well, but these are at the forefront.

Most psychology majors anywhere you will need to take a mixture of classes, not just psyc classes. they generally include comms papers and statistics for psychology.
I have a BA in Psychology.
taking classes you dont necessarily like is just a part of being at university, you just get over it and work hard.

Bump to Courty, I agree.

If it’s your passion, bear down and hump that barstard across the finish.

If it’s not your passion, it might not be the right subject for you.

“high risk youth” is a label they give to a lot of kids- those who are perhaps most at risk of turning to crime, having babies too young, come from abusive homes etc etc.
extramurally means by correspondance- meaning the last 2 years of my degree I did while working fulltime, off campus. they send you the material, you study it, and send assignments back in, rather than attending lectures actually on campus.
no im not going for a masters in Psychology, I was invited to do honours but ive decided its really not what i want to do. also, pretty much all the money in Psychology is in running a private practice, and thats not what i wanted to do.

oooh…wow..and your job is to help them??? and how do you know they have all that potential??? is there signs or something???
does that mean you were so successful in your study, they let you do that??? thats awesome… and after you finish you graduated, you already have a place to work…cool…
when you say pretty much, all the money in psychology is running a private practice, does that mean lecturers doenst get payed well…???

my job was to provide them with some tools to understand their own potential, things like overcoming fears or completing tough physical challenges, which we then related back to their lives.
everyone has potential. especially young people.

it wasnt necessarily because i was successful, its just another study option that some universities offer here. for honours you have to have pretty high grades though.

i guess it depends on the country, as to what you will get paid in different areas. Lecturers here dont make *great* money, and they work very long hours, and are usually involved in some sort of research also. they also must have a Phd. but im sure it varies from place to place.

oooh…cool…i seriously need to take one of those challenges…since i dont know my own potential…haha.

but you get the honors invitation…doesnt that shows you’re smart???

well, what country are you living in now??? can i know?
