well im not sure exactly how your back feels.. but when i have back pains… what i do is take a towel and roll it up like a carpet and then lay it down, and then lay on top of it so the towel is going up your back in the valley of your back.. where it dips..

Was the pain in your upper, middle, or lower back? If it was lower, it could of been a slipped disc or something. Also, you may have just pinched a nerve from the angle you bent over. If it’s hurting in the morning, take your butt to the hospital to get that checked out.

Courty, I had that happen to me, once. It turned out to be the delayed result of over using my back to move furniture around the day before. The pain was incredible, but eventually, I was able to get up and move around, but I was still in pain. The doctor prescribed a muscle relaxant and I rested for a few days. That was more than thirty years ago and there have been no repeat experiences.

don’t put heat on it that will keep it inflamed, ice will reduce the swelling around the vertebrae if you can stand it, and the other ‘free’ thing that will help is to find a way to hang from your ankles. like if you know someone with a tilt table that is ideal.

hospital. it could be a pinched nerve or worse. and if you slip a disk, you won’t be able to even move enough to crawl, which doesn’t end well for you. so i would say call someone for help, an ambulance if need be. but you NEED to see a medical professional.

soooo ya i went through the night whimpering in pain, couldnt even move this morning and finally got my **** to the hosp about 3 hours ago, where the extremely hot doctor informed me i have torn my “scotch fillet”. apparently coz im a vet student i should know what that means :S
the ol’ paperwork tells me that is my “erector spinae”, the muscle lying longitudinally along my spine.
whatever the **** it is, it hurts like a **** *****.
so they gave me a valium shot in me **** to relax the muscles, and sent me home with a bunch of fun coloured pain killers and more valium. hasnt kicked in yet, but then opiates tend to take about 4 hours to hit muscles, so in about an hour i should be feelin ****** awesome, hopefully lol

he said to rest for the rest of the night, and once the muscle relaxants have had a good chance to work out the spasm overnight i should go for a short walk tomorrow and stretch a wee bit. lucky its finals time so all im really doing is sitting studying anyway!

and dont worry, im already devising sneaky plans to make repeat trips to see hot doctor again hehe

haha, well. As long as you don’t have 13 wolves and know black belt martial arts, I’ll believe your not a serial killer haha. So, that means you’ll have to take something similar to the MCATs later right? What field are you planning on entering?

no actual wolves, just the destructive hellhound who is often mistaken for one lol. though her dadda had some wolfy in him.
our sort of version of the MCATs was earlier this year for me, we take 4 prerequisite classes, and our combined grades from those classes plus a problem solving/crit thinking test mark determine whether we become one of the chosen few lol.

im not entirely sure what im going to do yet, definitely surgical if i do well enough, but whether i do large animal, small/companion an. or equine well i just do not know yet.

Oh wow. Yeah, that surgical rotation exam sounds rather important. If you don’t pass, could you retake it? Or would you have to take the entire class over again? Also, if your able to work on animals in the surgical field, i see no reason you couldn’t be a doctor either.

mmm yea i can retake it, next june, however they take into account your last 2 years worth of science grades then to construct your GPA, which wouldnt be a problem, but it adds a wholeeeeeeee nother yeeeeeeear onto an already long *** course.

I have considered being a doctor. I already have a degree in Psychology, and have been working with high risk kids in the outdoors for a few years now…which is kinda why i turned to animals, i got a tad sick of seeing people eff up their lives when they could have done so much more if they just tried. Is why i like animals, they always give their best until they drop dead.

although sometimes when hellhound is ripping my socks and bed to bits i could definitely go back to people lol

I’ve decided a long time ago that whenever I have a problem i go straight to a specialist…this avoids unnecessary doctors bills seeing that you end up with a specialist anyways.

This might sound counter-intuitive, but have you tried doing ab exercises? If it’s been two weeks and you’re still hurting, it’s time to try something else.

The erector spinae went into spasm because they ‘decided’ you were bending too far forward and to the right, so the left back-side of you tried to pull you back upright a bit too harshly. If you’re still in pain, it’s because the pain-killers just killed the sensation, but really didn’t do anything to fix that problem.

There’s a muscle technique called ‘reciprocal inhibition’, where if one muscle is working, its opposite muscle relaxes. (Example: If you tighten your bicep, the triceps automatically relax.)

The opposites of your erector spinae are your rectus abdominus (the ’six-pack’ muscles of your stomach). While you’re flat on your back anyway, try gradually strengthening your abs, first by just contracting and holding them. If you can do that without hurting your back, try gently pulsed crunches (NOT sit-ups!) with your knees bent and feet flat on the (floor? bed?). If that seems to go well, try doing the crunches while holding your feet (knees still bent) an inch or two off the floor.

Hope you feel better!

I agree with wantstrut and on top of the crunches, maybe a stretch could help? If its muscle related and not a disc stretching should help. Best done when your feeling alright on meds, a stretch called brown eye to the sky. Basically lay on your back and lift your legs up and get your knees close to your face, real close. This also helps with excessive gas haha. It might sound and probably does look like something out of the gay karma sutra, so do it in the privacy of your house, unless your into that type stuff.hahaha

Hope you feel better soon.

Jonish is right, the stretch afterwards is a very important component of the technique. So sorry I forgot to mention it, I SHOULD have added:

Do a crunch-move and hold it for 30 seconds (or up to one minute).
Rest for 8-10 seconds, then use your arms to hug your knees to your chest until you feel a comfortable stretch in the tight region of your back.
After about 15 seconds, that feeling of stretch will fade, so tighten your hug until the feeling of stretch comes back. Hold until it fades again. That’s one ’set’. Do 3 sets, three to five times a day. The bonus to this: with strong abs, you’re less likely to throw out your back for no reason again.

Personally, though, I wouldn’t do it while on pain meds, since it’d dull the pain and you’ll be less able to gauge whether you’re stretching too hard. There should be no increase in pain in your back if you’re doing it correctly. If you’re still taking pills for pain, I’d suggest doing this just before taking a dose.

Hi, I came in late and haven’t read the previous comments, so it may have been said in the above.

But hang in your feet, like a bat! It is not a joke, I mean it.
There is a rehab thing like an almost upright board, you step into it and lock your feet.
Then you can swing slowly backwards to the angle you prefer, completely upside down if you so want.

That is not harmful but will allow stretch your body, especially the spine, hip joints and legs.
Some people recommend to hang in your arms, but there is no way of doing so without tensioning your muscles.
This device allows the muscles to be completely relaxed while your skeleton and muscles are stretched out.

My previous job had one, but I am planning to buy one for myself. It costs almost USD 300, but it is worth it.
I am sure that they have one you may use in your local hospital or rehab clinic.

“A beginning Lumbago” will be stopped when using it, but it is good for repairing too. And by the way, you’ll feel very refreshed by getting some few extra drops of blood to your brain.
