I NEED HELP RIGHT NOW!

!! So….I’m working on my mid-term and I realize after I’m almost finishedthat I need to turn in a “reasearch file” along with my paper. Here is the final paragraph of the teacher’s instructions.

Regardless of your topic or approach to the topic, there are some assignment requirements to fulfill. Use (and properly document) information from at least two periodicals (a newspaper, magazine or journal); at least one piece of that information should take the form of a quotation and at least one should take the form of a paraphrase or summary. The final essay will be a minimum of 3 full pages in length and will not exceed five pages. As usual, the paper will be double-spaced, in a “normal” 12-point font, and will have 1” margins. No title page is required, but you will need an MLA Style works cited page (does not count toward the page count) and a research file.

I guess my question is………….WHAT THE HELL IS A RESEARCH FILE????!!!!!

Don’t stress. Most likely she is referring to a list of books and periodicals that you consulted - but may or may not have actually quoted from in your paper.

So she wants 1. a list of works cited - i.e. those from which you derive direct quotes or have paraphrased the original author’s intent. and 2. a total list of all books and periodicals that you used in your research - a bibliography.

The confusion here is between end notes (or foot notes which I prefer) and the bibliography (or list of total works).

Do you have time tomorrow to ask your teacher for clarification or is this due tomorrow?

It’s due 9am tomorrow. I know she wants all works listed, but the use of the word “file” has me thinking it may be more to it. One classmate told me she said to turn in the paper along with the research file. have you ever heard of a professor wanting to check your references via USB drive?

i don’t think it matters what form of recording you use for your “file”… on paper, data stick etc but to be on the safe side print it all out.

I’m pretty sure what she wants is both a works cited page (end notes) AND a master bibliography - including everything that you looked at or read (video, webpages, books, online articles, periodicals) in preparation. Unless the terminology has changed since I was in school and rather than bibliography they are using the term “research file” to capture new media forms on line, I can’t think of anything else it could possibly be other than a good old fashioned bibliography.
