worried help: At night my friend has recently had disturbing experiences when she is alone. - Help.com

At night my friend has recently had disturbing experiences when she is alone.

She is hearing voices. She is worried she is going insane and fears telling the doctor about her experience because of this. I am trying to encourage her to do this anyway because I’m sure there are numerous things it could be physically causing it, or even if it is something psychological she should get help.

It has started recently and is now happening each night when everyone is in bed and she is alone in her room. She is 21.

She first of all heard a whispering woman, which progressed into mumbling. Last night it was for the first time a male voice, persistently mumbling. She is very distressed by this understandably. It is not noise she is hearing within the house or from outwith - she knows this is not a noise audible to others but only herself.

Is there some anonymous number she can call to discuss her experience or can anyone here provide advice? If we can have other likely possibilities to look at other than something psychological, maybe she will go to the doctors.

I even thought of tinnitus. But I don’t know if it is only old people who get this - because my only experience of it is my Gran, whom hears singing in her ears often. Is it possible my friend of 21 could have this or something like it?

She worries it is psychological most I think, whereas I am worried for her in case it is a brain tumour or something terrifyingly serious.

Please help me here on what it could be, the large and small possibilities so I can try to persuade her to go and get herself checked out. She is scared that she will get locked up or something and her choices taken away from her. But I don’t want her to have to continue in this way.

consider going to a paranormal helper/healer/medium - ask around, they’re not too hard to find. try to make sure you’re not picking a charlatan, there’s plenty of those too :/ see what they can tell about the voices. maybe it could be helpful, maybe not, but in any case, they’re not going to lock her away or put her on drugs.

Tinnitus is not exclusively for the old, you can get it at any age but i dont think it is that.
Tinitus is not hearing clear sounds or words.
Seek help.

Well, you are absolutely right that the most likely cause is something that the doctor would be able to resolve best.

Tinnitus can occur in all ages and does indeed cause sufferers to think they are hearing whispering or singing. It is certainly worth investigating.

Does this only occur at night and when she is alone? It is possible that some deep-rooted subconscious fear is the cause of this and that the solitude, quiet and darkness bring those subconscious thoughts to the fore. Perhaps she would consider talking to a counsellor? Hypnotherapy can also be very beneficial in dealing with underlying phobias and fears.

Stress can affect people in the oddest ways too. The end of the day is when we feel most alone and helpless. Consider whether her day is over-charged or whether she is over-burdened with worry that she is bottling up. Suggest relaxation therapies such as aromatherapy, soft music and positive reinforcement. Maybe she would benefit from a nightlight or a group of friends willing to be “on call” should she need company.

Another possibility is that as she prepares to sleep, she “dreams” these things yet feels she is still awake. In other words this could be related to a sleeping disorder. Her doctor would be able to refer her to a specialist sleep disorder clinic to investigate that.

The mind is a wonderful, complex thing. But it’s important to remember that it is the product of our very phsyical brain, which, like any other body organ can sometimes malfuntion, develop a problem and need medical intervention. It is VERY important that she sees a doctor and talks this through because her symptoms could be indicative of something needing urgent treatment. Her doctor may wish to arrange for a scan to ensure that there is no underlying problem with blood vessels, cell structure and the like.

Finally, even if a mental illness is feared - all things can be helped. There is no longer any stigma or shame and there is plenty of support out there for all sorts of weird, wonderful and beautiful conditions.

She should really see a doctor. Seems likely to be a medical issue.
