Your opinion on this is appreciated

So… conclusion writing… so not my forte. I’ve never been very good at writing conclusions for papers. I’m great at theses and body paragraphs of papers, but, like so much in life, the endings just kinda fizzle out. Some people say I should simply reiterate my thesis statement, but that doesn’t seem right. Other people say to include some “catchy” new information, but I can’t see my prof. being too thrilled about that…

What’s your opinion on conclusion writing? Do you simply copy-and-paste your thesis statement? Do you give “catchy” new info? Or do you do something different?

  1. copy-and-paste
  2. “catchy” new stuff
  3. something different (explain below?)

(See what I mean about bad endings to things I write?)

I think that you need to do “catchy new info” that is not THAT new…still relates to something in your article; and is a sort of conclusion statement to tie it all up….

Conclusions must never have anything new in them that is not in the rest of the paper.

Using the SEE paragraph format can help you: First your thesis. Then a series of “Statement, Example, Explanation” paragraphs… one for each point you make. Then your conclusion summarizes how your thesis is proved by your series of SEE arguments.

As in…a new way to state what is in your paper…a catchy way to sum it all up

Sum it up in different words, reiterating your strongest points.

My paper’s on how the Odyssey celebrates women, even though it is a text from an extremely patriarchal era. I’m thinking of using a quote from someone famous in my conclusion. Do y’all think that’ll be okay as far as the rules go?

Nope.

Nothing new in the conclusion.

How does this sound? I’m going to add a few more sentences, but this is the ‘backbone’ of what I am trying to say:

“On the topic of women, W. L. George once said that ‘[m]en have been found to deny woman an intellect; they have credited her with instinct, with intuition, with a capacity to correlate cause and effect much as a dog connects its collar with a walk. But intellect in its broadest sense, the capacity consecutively to plan and steadfastly to execute, they have often denied her’ (The Intelligence of Woman, George, 1). This may be the case in most titles of classical Greek literature, as well as in classical Greek society, but this is not true of i>The Odyssey /i>, which is a veritable celebration of feminine strength and intelligence.”

Um… NOTHING NEW IN THE CONCLUSION!

Conclusion is simply a summary of your thesis and all the proof statements for your thesis.
