Some kids really do not know where to begin - others think this is the quickest way to get things done so they can go out sooner!
It’s usually pretty easy to tell when it’s the latter.
It is possible to help the former without actually doing the work. Not all kids have the benefit of good teachers who guide them in how to research, what are good and bad information sources and how to begin tackling a problem. Study skills are learned, not automatic. Lots of parents out there don’t know, some don’t care and some aren’t even there to support their kids in their learning.
The best answers are those that point the students in the right direction without giving them the answers. Things like leading them to an educational site where they can find out things or to the extra lessons that teachers put on youtube - these are positive things we can do.
Simply giving the answer to the question does not help. It neither boosts their understanding nor does it do them any favours when they get to class the next day and teacher assumes they know what they are doing so pushes them harder or quizzes them in class…
What teachers do like to hear in class is “I didn’t understand the homework, but I asked someone and they showed me this great site which made it a little clearer because it had this explanation…”
As for the students skating on the backs of others. We are pretty adept at spotting work that isn’t their own and they rarely pass the exams they need to because they simply have not put the time into perfecting their skills.
