Life doesnt interest me. - Help.com

Life doesnt interest me.

People don’t interest me.

People interest me as specimens but not companions.

I get nothing of value from most friendships or interactions, say, 99 percent.

I feel like everything is muted and grey.

I’m not depressed, just weighed down by how uninteresting things are.

Depression doesn’t necessarily mean you feel sad.

Loss of interest in things that are usually pleasurable is a sign of depression. Lack of meaning, seeing no point in life, are all indicative of some degree of depression.

Maybe you need to look into yourself to find the answers as to why you find no point in life. Perhaps you have attitudes that can be adjusted.
Or maybe you need to do the opposite, and stop being too introspective and just live life. Sometimes just forgetting about your own likes/dislikes and doing things to help others or simply become involved in things outside yourself will give you a new perspective.

Only you can help yourself.

Good luck.

I realize that I can just live life like that.

But I dont want too.

To me that would be giving in. I watch people live like that everyday. Its fake to me.

What’s fake about it?

I see where you’re coming from, but maybe it’s too quick a judgment…. Do you think everyone is secretly suffering and acting like they’re happy?

And if you don’t want to do anything about it, why are you posting about it on help.com?

No, I honestly just think they dont see the world the same way I do. I think that makes it much easier for them to contently exist in a way which i dont find possible.

And thats fine. I’ve met lots of people who do see things like me, and they seem to deal with similar issues. Of course some of them are depressed…a lot of them are actually. I wouldnt really enjoy heading down that road.

I see what you mean.

But I still think there’s something you don’t feel satisfied with, otherwise you wouldn’t be posting up on this help site. You know, life isn’t a choice between two extremes. There are many many ways of living it. Maybe you can find one that works for you?

I don’t know what else I can say.

hey, the fact that you recognize that you don’t want to live like that is already a good first step. :)

Dude, think for a second about something: what do you want to do in life? What are your hobbies? If you hafe something solid to think about in the future maybe you’re going to skip deprssion.

I had a plan, undergrad in poli sci, then law, then international work. But lately it really doesnt matter to me. Also my hobbies dont matter to me either. Other than writing, that matters. But I still really cant be bothered.

Something else I’d like to say is that I used to have an attitude similar to yours. Changing your attitude is a difficult thing to do but it’s doable. Like losing weight, or becoming good at a sport, it requires a lot of training.

In my case, meditation and reading about Buddhist spirituality helped me. For some people it’s volunteering at an animal shelter, or planting a tree. It sounds cheesy, but anything beats sitting around feeling crappy.

Another thing is that dedicating time to something bigger than yourself that improves others’ lives or the world in general will really help how you see things.

Sometimes something as simple as exercise or physical activity can be uplifting.

I wish you the best.
