I am in serious financial trouble. - Help.com

I am in serious financial trouble.

I have been a pharmacy technician for the past 10 years. I recently, May 2008, have gone back to school to get my degree in Construction Management. My class and work schedule conflicted and I was eventually let go from my job in Feb, 2009. I thought I would be alright with my 403b until I found a new job, but then I was in for a surprise. Due to the economy my pension plan’s funds had fallen below 80% and according to the 2006 Pension Protection Act(PPA) there were restrictions on my benefit payment options. It turned out that out of the $12,000 I had saved only half was available to me as a payout and the other half I would have to receive as a life long annuity, which equaled to $16 a month. The other option I had was to leave all the money in the retirement fund and wait for the pension fund to raise above 80%, which it still hasn’t. With little to no choice I took the half and the rest in annuity. 9 months later that I still haven’t found a job, I have no money, I’ve almost been evicted twice, my car which was in the shop for repairs 2 months after I lost my job is still there due to my inability to pay for the repairs, and I also have the dealership calling me everyday to locate the car to repossess it. To make matters worst, while waiting for my payout from my 403b funds my account had no cash in it and my insurance wasn’t paid. Not realizing I had no insurance and that my license had been suspended due to that fact, I was pulled over and arrested. The charges could be dropped by simply getting my License back but to do so i would have to pay the fine, which I don’t have the money for. And it gets better! To avoid eviction one of the two times I had to call a friend and ask for to borrow the money, which I have been unable to pay back. My mother has been helping out where she can but with my younger brother and a large mortgage it is getting tight on her too and she is about at the end of her rope. Now there is some light to all this. While I have been looking for a job I came across a program to help job seekers build and enhance there work skills. The program, which I joined, is called StreetWise. And although very helpful in many areas, I still have not been able to find employment. I’m am not here to solicit any monetary help. I have been spending the last 9 months on my laptop on someones in and out signal that I pic up occasionally applying to almost every job posted on the net in the DC Metro area! Out of frustration I googled “need financial help” and this site came up. What I would like help with is finding a job! Like I mentioned earlier I went back to school, which I have been out of for the last 2 terms due to my financial situation, for Construction Management. I am ideally looking for an Administrative Assistant, Clerical, or general office position. Preferable in the construction, development, real estate, or property management. But I am open to almost anything, as long as I am able to sustain myself with it. I am willing to work days, evenings, nights, and weekends. I have over 10 year experience in health care as a pharmacy technician. Along with the technical medical aspect of the pharmacy technician position, it also includes a high level of administrative, clerical and general office work. I am experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and have a average typing speed of 50 words per minute. If you know of any possible opportunities or maybe just some advice, please I would love to hear from you. Bad things sometimes happen to good people and right now I know I am in a bad situation but I am determined to keep pushing until things get better. If you made this far in my rant, I want to thank you for taking the time to read my story. I’m am looking forward to any advice you guys may have.

Thank You,
Richard

rt614, you have one long post! I recommend applying to 4 temporary agencies out there. You’ll land a job quickly. Temp. positions usually are hired on full time after a few months. It’s another way of recruiting the best candidate. Also, never ever cash out of a retirement plan when the market is down. Always wait for it to go back up, even if it means eating beans at the homeless shelter! Rolling it over to a traditional IRA is OK just as long as its a Trustee-to-Trustee transfer. The market will go back up! Trust me!

I know you seek a job for your expertize but just take anything for now, you are getting knee deep in the cess pool of debt, for the time being take anything that will bring money in. In CA there are families without homes living in their cars, for the simple fact they didn’t take action in the beginning. This will go from bad to worse if you let it, when and if the economy picks up, you can then look for the jobs that are better suited to you.

Yup, you just gotta take anything you can find these days man. apply anywhere and everywhere, and sign up with every temp agency in town. cut back on every single bill you can until you get back on your feet-learn how to save electricity by switching things off at the wall etc.
