Volunteer help: I am a an unintentional volunteer. - Help.com

I am a an unintentional volunteer.

I was working humanitarian relief when I became ill two years ago. Good news: I am healthy again! WOo HOo! Bad news: I am unemployed and without a degree. Booooo! So I am trying to figure out what to do now. I have experience in relief, teaching English as a foreign language and general article writing but I haven’t been able to find employment though I have been actively looking for the past 4 months. There just aren’t any want ads for “former relief works”. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a field to look into or a path to take? To become a societal burden now would be horrendous. (BTW: I would love to go back to volunteering abroad but I must earn enough money to pay for my flight out of the USA as well as the medical bills that I have accumulated while here first.) Right now, I am spending time volunteering with local shelters and tutoring facilities. I do not qualify to monetarily compensated due to my lack of degree. Thus, my status as an unintentional volunteer. Thanks for your assistance!

Peace Corps would be a good place to check into, my mother was in it for three years in South Africa. I think you would have to interview with them and they place you somewhere where your skills could be used.

Awesome thought! I actually called them & they said that because I do not have a degree that they can not use me “at this time”. Perhaps, I spoke with the incorrect department. I will try again. Thanks for the suggestion, agaperoot.

You know my Mother did not have a degree, but she wanted in so badly that she ended up fitting herself in. She was doing something like home economics training basic stuff a living with the villagers, she had a place and a garden and she had so many friends she meet there. I think it is worth at least trying, she did have the basic degree from community college, but no more than that when they accepted her into it.

im pretty sure you do need a degree to join the Peace Corps now.
have you looked into english language schools? english as a second language tutoring at colleges, unis, high schools? put up notices in the languages you can teach in,charge a nominal hourly fee and ill bet you get some work that way.

Ah yes, I spoke with PC again and they have no use of me.
The universities and schools have also responded in the negative due to my lack of degree.
Unfortunately, I was also turned down for a student loan this week.
Oddly enough the stated reason was that I do not have a “credible U.S. work history”.
I am seeing the humor in this struggle more and more every moment. :D
Meanwhile, I am am pursuing your other suggestions.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your ideas.
I appreciate it greatly.
