Theater Assignment: Help

Nothing big just a little problem I need help with. I have to lip sync to a song of my choosing between 2-3 minutes. I’ve narrowed down my choices to these three songs, but I’m still not sure which song to sing to. Which one should I sing along with?

1) Imagine by John Lennon (my front runner so far)

2) They Don’t Know by Jeb Loy Nichols (press ‘play’ button at the top next to the ablum artwork)

3) Save Me by Jem (sung by a woman, I’m a male)

Your opinion is much appreciated!

I agree Imagine would be great. But then again the song by Jem would be a good character change, which also get bonus points on the grading scale.

Here’s the rubric specifically I’m being graded on:

“Rock stars like Ashley Simpson and Brittney Spears have taught us that not everyone can pull off a good lip sync. In order to perform a convincing lip sync, a performer must be aware of the recording artist’s breath control, duplicate the length and energy with which the artist holds noes, and perform with gusto! Now, you have a chance to flex your mad lip sync skills for the class. Choose an appropriate song (PG-13 rated) 2-3 minutes in length. Memorize the lyrics and practice your piece to entertain your audience. Be prepared to perform starting November 11th, 2009. I will draw names from a hat to determine the order of performers. You will be graded on the following criteria:

A) Demonstrates correct attention to artist’s breathing
B) Showmanship
C) Demonstrates preparation of piece
D) Demonstrates understanding of song content in performance
E) Apprpriate song choice (PG-13)

Well Imagines breathing would be easier to do well then Save me. But one thing they always teach you in theater is to go BIG. If you mess up then mess up BIG, because then at least you werent holding yourself back. I think you should take the challenge of a song other then Imagine.

well, out of those 3 i would go with Imagine, (i dont think singing a girl song would be the best choice if you’re a guy…it wouldnt be believeable, and the point of lip synching is to be believeable.) but i also agree with mz.mo. imagine is very pretty and great, but if this is a DRAMA class, maybe you should do something more…dramatic. not that imagine isnt a dramatic song, but its not AS exciting as something could be. but if you’re performing on the 11th, you should choose within the next day or so, so that you have time to prepare. when i perform, i always choose my song like, weeks or even months in advance.

Any thoughts on ‘They Don’t Know’? I got a lot of feedback on the other two songs.

I would go with whatever your favorite song is. The one you love to sing. You naturally copy the singer of your favorite song. So it shouldn’t be to much of a problem. If I had to choose, it would be Imagine. Only because of the message it sends. And plus I love singing it.
