I have a long history of depression, I’m 20 and I feel like i’ve failed at life already by getting into such a mess. Here goes:
A month I get 930 wages. My boyfriends JC benefits goes in twice a month totalling 190.
so, 1120 a month.
My outgoings per month are:
89 Bannatyne Gym (Ends April)
18 Sky
100 Vodafone (Which is for mine & boyfriends phones. will be £30 cheaper after December)
141 for a loan for our shared car.
170 insurance
£250 fuel (its about £51 per week)
£90-110 Shopping (about 25 per week)
£50 tobacco (quitting isn’t an option. We use roll ups with the cheapest Asda sell)
We owe:
1500 to his mom
800 to mine
100 to argos card
100 to capital one CC.
If there is a luxary we would keep it would be the **** & sky tv. As we don’t have any money we kinda watch tv all the time.
I have sold more or less everything I can and still have stuff going on ebay now but if I sell anything else I will be going to work without any clothes or shoes (of which may I add I have hardly anything.) I have 1 pair of shoes, 1 pair of trousers, 1 pair of jeans and about 10 tops in my wardrobe so I can’t sell any of those really.
Plus, as i’m 20 and my boyfriend is 23 neither of us can get any other benefits because we both live with our parents, who as you can see above have already been helping us out. Its both our fault we’re in this mess. How do I get out of it? What are the *rules* on getting out of contracts early - ie Gym membership?
Oh and my boyfriend has been unemployed due to his old place going bust with the recession. He and I apply for jobs every day for him but only a small handful of interviews with no luck so far. Sorry this is garbled, I don’t know where else to turn.
If you have so much time to be watching tv, you have enough time to get extra hours at work or another job.
Dont be picky with the work you will both do, if you are willing to do anything you will find work.
You should not be relying on the government to pay your way, you are both adults & you have nothing wrong with you.
Gym membership can be cancelled early, though there may be a charge for doing so. You need to read the fine print on your contract for this.
Ok, well I work 40 hours a week and study part time (fees are paid for) for 16 hours. I’m applying but not found anything.
My OH is applying as said above but no luck. I appreciate your advise but I’m after some actual practical advice on HOW to reduce things etc.
We’ve both been working since we were 16, he was made redundant so I think your reply is a little harsh - we want to pay our way, we’re struggling. Thats the point of my post.
Sure, i can see your strugling & im not being harsh, im being honest, 56 hrs in a week for work & education is not that much, you could fit a lot more hours in, you could do up to 80 + hours a week, it just depends how much you want to do.
Your bf should be less picky over what work he does, if he get’s a crap job, at least he is earning, then whilst doing said crap job he can be looking for something better.
You need more money, employment for him & extra hours for you will give you extra money. Thats your practical advice on how to reduce thing’s.
What happened to his redundancy pay, that should be a substantial ammount?

He’s happy to do a crap job, he’s been applying for the usual *looked down upon* things, like bin men, mcdonalds, funeral bearer etc.
His redundancy pay was nothing, the company went bust and somehow they managed to get out of paying anyone, which is awful I mean he’s 23 years old and he’d given 5 years of work to them and was very good at his job! He was an engineer and where we are that industry is just… gone! and the only jobs in that sector are for people who have several formal qualifications. So at the minute he’s applying for loads of things.
There are usually about 100 jobs where we are at any 1 time being advertised, he applies for nearly all of them - I post all his CV’s off free from where I work. He just doesn’t get the jobs, in the last 3 months unemployment rose by 300,000 so I take it thats why its getting worse! So many people are applying. He’s going to register with lots of agencies today to see if he can even just get some temp work.
Thank you for your advise, I have a bit of a past with depression and only just started coping without anti depressants and councillers, so along with the normal crazy that life is - all this on top is just getting to me some days more than others. I was particularly low last night which is the reason I thought you were being harsh, it was just my state of mind.

1) It’s illegal for them not to pay out if he was made redundant, if you want i will find you something in the law about it, he should act on this.
2) I am an engineer, (mechanical) i was working as a mechanic before i got my qualifications, there are places that will employ a person without qualifications.
What is his CV like? If employers are seeing lots everyday, his needs to stand out from the rest, it has to be the dog’s boll0ck’s of CVs, you can find site’s online to show you how to improve a CV.
If he lies on it he will probabally get caught but a bit of exagerating can’t hurt, it can make a lot of difference.

Can he still persue it though if the company doesn’t exist anymore?
He was a mechanical engineer too, but unqualified but he is just as good as anyone who is qualified. He was really really good at his job, were struggling to find any place around us that wants someone who isn’t formally qualified. Are you from the uk if you don’t mind me asking?
His CV is pretty good, well I think so - I made it an exact duplicate of mine but with his info on it. When I was made redundant at the beginning of this year I was really lucky, I got a handful of interviews and could pick where I wanted to work basically. He’s just not been as lucky, his CV is good because it shows some really good employment history. He’s been a team leader before, a head marshall and his CV shows he sticks at his jobs for a long long time. But he doesn’t have great qualifications. He got good GCSE’s, but then only a certificate afterwards.
He should be able to do, it’s possible to claim for injury’s sustained at work after the business has been sold or shut down so i don’t see why not.
I am from the UK but i am in the US now. It was in the UK i was a mechanic.
Maybe have a look at some of the CV site’s online, see if there is anything you can add to it, change, adjust or exagerate.
I lie on my CV about my GCSE results, ive always got away with it.

lol! Fair enough. I think I’ll re do it. Maybe its too girly or something? Well its not girly but maybe a mans CV shouldn’t be so neat and professional? I don’t know…
I’ve always been told to put “8 GCSE passes” etc on a CV and did well with mine. However i’m studying for my second degree and i’m 20 years old so it looks really good on my CV. But for him maybe not? How do you put across your grades if you don’t mind me asking?
I didn’t do too badly in the GCSE’s, i just thaught i could make it look better, i am quite clever, i just didnt try hard at school, i got bullied in the last year so i bunked off a lot.
Im not going to push it too far saying i got an A+ for everything,
English lit - B
English B-
Maths C
Physics B+
History B-
Geography C
Science B
French D-
I think the french result help’s, it makes the other results more believable, that they are not all great, i did fail french but i got an F!!
I also have college details after school. I was a nurse before i was a mechanic, i think that shows an ability to turn a hand to anything when it is soo different.
His CV still needs to be neat & profesional but yes there is a chance that it could look a bit girly if it is yours.
I alway’s include my references when im giving a possible employer my CV, got to sell yourself, get in there before someone else does.

Hmmm, I think I’ll have a go at revamping it for him. He’s not as good as paperwork things as I am.. but its what my career is based on so I’d hope so!!
Thank you for all your help, i’m feeling much better today. I think yesterday I was in such a state of panic. I’ll just keep soldiering on!
