I think people may try to hurt each other to build themself up. Its a matter of self esteem and pride. Tearing someone else down can make an insecure person feel better about themself. Its something I have had to deal with, its a way that I try not to be like.

It’s either because the person that it saying it has low confidence in themself, and so they put other people down, or how jonish719 says, to build themselves up. Most people who are bullies have low self confidence, and get a thrill picking on other kids, or kids who won’t defend themselves.
