Most people work best in numerous short sessions of around an hour or with short breaks in between hours. I guess maybe 5 or 6 hours a day.

Once your brain explodes and your parents are picking your brains off the walls and curtains! I say after that happens call it a day.

I know its too much when I start running in circles and staring at my family members and laughing for no reason. Never study more than 6 hours, seriouslly. And if you do, at least take breaks.

studying is best done while the mind is in an absorbant state
whene u r spinning your wheels and getting nowhere
stop get out of the vehical and go do something els
come back , re ascess the situation, alter some enviromental values to make it work better for your effectivness
and persevere
never burn out
it is more expensive to blowup an engine / transmition than to take a break, and alter variable values

hope i wasnt to far out for you

if you really want to learn it and do well, and its only for a short period, then nothing is too much!
lordy, ive been pulling all nighters with naps for a few weeks now due to finals.
but thats probably a tad insane.
research shows most people only absord about 60 percent of what they read, and that concentration in a period of time is highest at the beginning and end.
so short bursts are best.
