I work really hard at my crappy job, despite the fact that I absolutely loathe the place and my manager.

I am morally opposed to the things I have to do for a meager $7.25 an hour. Unfortunately, I have a boyfriend and a 17 year old sister to support, so like I said, I work hard for the tiny, almost slap in the face paychecks I get. The point in all of this is that my boss HATES me! I can’t quite figure out why because I’m pretty much the only one that works there that actually does what I’m supposed to do. I’m nice to everyone, I never call out, and I’m never late. The ogre can’t fire me because she doesn’t have any reason to, so she just makes me absolutely miserable in hopes that I’ll just flip out one day and quit. She screams at me and criticises me in front of co-workers and customers. If ANYTHING goes wrong, I am automatically at fault. She starts aweful rumors and lies about me to the owner of the business, who also happens to be her sister in law. I’m trying to find another job, but I live in a small town where jobs are almost impossible to come by, so it’s no easy thing. What I’m wondering is does anyone have any advice as to how I can tame the beast and stop getting tortured at work???

Talk to her and tell her how she makes you feel, but do it in the most polite, professional manner. Tell her that you do everything that you are supposed to, and you don’t understand her hostility towards you.

Talk to her about how she makes you feel.

I did once. A little over a year ago. She chalked it up to her being from Rhode Island. I don’t see how that justifies her being a heinous you know what, but apatently, it does! At the time, things were a little less personal. Now it’s like she targets me and tries for nothing less than an emotional breakdown. I’m pretty sure she just finds pleasure in other people’s pain. Thank you for your advice. I appreciate it!

Nah. I would have to go to corporate, and I’m pretty sure they couldn’t do anything about a situation like mine. That’s a pretty drastic step anyway. When it comes to that, I’ll just make some calls to the better business bureau, the health department, and the IRS!

Maybe your boss is just one of those people that doesnt like to see people who bother to do exactly what they are supposed to and never step out of line, or maybe because she thinks you seem perfect, she takes all her negative emotions out on you. Unfortunately her reasons for hating you wont necessarily help you to solve the situation. What kind of job is it? I dont think it will make much of a difference to know but it might help.
