I made mashed potatoes tonight. - Help.com

I made mashed potatoes tonight.

I used an electric mixer to mash/mix the potatoes, however I did all this in a teflon pan, and didnt realize it would take the teflon off the pan. I ate the mashed potatoes without realizing the flakes had come off, and when I went to clean up noticed it. I am freaking out now, how bad is this for my health? am I in trouble? I feel fine now thought. Should I be worried?

You may feel a little ill but I think you will be ok. If you are really nervous call poison control and they can give you more info. The pan/pot will allow food to stick more now, so be careful or just throw it out. next time putt them in a mixing bowl and mash them.

I’d say you’ll be okay. Just don’t make a habit of it.

You won’t get sick from using it just once, but you should throw the pan away because most doctors agree that eating food from a scratched teflon pan can cause cancer. (Only after extended use, I’m sure!)

Thanks all, I took mz.mo’s advice and called the poison control hotline, had a nice discussion with this cute voice from Uconn about it - she said it would pass right through me, no problem. The more important thing to be concerned about is cooking with teflon at high temperatures… it will emit a gas that is very toxic… she had the gas, even thought i wouldnt smell it, would make small pets very ill. Aparrently there have been documented cases where the gas was enough to kill birds in the other room.. wow! no more teflon for me…

I use glass and iron. Better for you.
