questions about getting my drivers permit

ok well i’m a high school senior right now and i’m reading the Driving in California 2009 handbook. right now i’m doing my college apps so i haven’t had any time to read my handbook, or i read parts but i later forget what i read. should i just wait till 2010 to take my permit test?? if i wait till 2010, will i have to buy a new handbook, read it, then take the test?
