I think I have Asperger’s Syndrome. - Help.com

I think I have Asperger’s Syndrome.

I was doing some reading and I realised the symptoms really could apply to me, and I have done some online tests and the scores were well in the range for a person with Asperger’s.
I just wanted some other people’s opinions. The diagnostic categories I fit are:
Socially awkward - I find it exceptionally hard to make small talk and make friends with new people.
Independent - I don’t really put myself in situations involving socialising and I am very conscious of this. I have reclusive tendencies.
Obsessions - I have really narrow, small interests and I know ridiculous amounts about them, and I keep everything other people might throw away because it might be useful in the future. I collect books.
Physically clumsy - I have very poor hand eye coordination and take no interest in participating in sports.
Memory - I have a such a good memory for facts, figures, people’s birthdays etc. that it is almost photographic.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have conditions associated with Asperger’s, if that helps.

All those symptoms are also parts of:

Being a teenager
Depression
Generalised Anxiety Disorder
Autism
ALS Dementia
Schizoaffective Disorder
Schizophrenia
Mad Cow disease

And I’m not trying to be funny either - it sounds like you have spent all this time trying to pretend your life and bits in it are problematic or part of a disease? When in fact you are completely normal. My advise would really be to stop worrying and spend more time living your life. If your really worried visit your GP.

Asperger’s is actually a form of autism, and I am not sure some of these, especially the last one, would account for these symptoms all for most of my life (I am 16 years old) or the physical side of it.
I will visit my GP - thanks for the help.

It sounds silly, but MCD is accountable for some really radical personality changes, I wouldn’t of mentioned it otherwise.

The only thing above that suggests something to individualise you by is the fact that you collect books. Thats a personality defining characteristic, however the rest just shows you are a teenager.

At 16 you don’t need to be worrying about all of these things, definately get over to your GP to put your mind at rest, and lets hope its nothing.

Asperger’s Syndrome is a huge deal. This is usually diagnosed as a young child. Many people go online reading about mental disorders and realize that some of the symptoms apply to them. I could find 10 disorders for myself right now! The truth is, that until these symptoms significantly affect your daily quality of life, it is not a disorder. Counting on online tests for a diagnosis is about as useful as looking into a magic 8 ball! Not to sound harsh, but that is the truth. I say see a psychologist if you feel there is a serious problem. Be careful about “self-diagnosis” because you can actually convince yourself that you have the problem and worsen/increase the symptoms! The mind is a powerful thing!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I absolutely agree with your points about self diagnosis - I was just doing some reading and realised that it is an associated condition of Tourette’s Syndrome, which I have, with 1 in 6 people with Tourette’s Syndrome having Asperger’s Syndrome as a comorbidity. It would just explain why I am the way I am, however, Raver makes some very valid points. Thanks again everyone.
