work help: I can’t stop procrastinating! - Help.com

I can’t stop procrastinating!

At all! I close the internet, and 5 minutes later, it’s open again. I sign out of msn, and the same happens. I stop going on facebook, then I’m on wikipedia, then I’m on here! Or I’ll suddenly realise I’ve been playing around with my phone for 20 minutes (hell knows how). And I’ve still got another thousand words of essay to write!

Any powerful anti-procrastination tips?

I don’t have any tips, but I will let you know that you’re not alone, because I’m doing the exact same thing, and I always do :)

I have the same problem sometimes. Set an alarm to go off every 5 minutes as a reminder to get back to work. It helps a little.

The devil makes work for idle hands and you will burn in hell if you don’t stop procrastinating…? Strong enough for you…Eternal damnation or write an essay…Your choice…

God

Procrastination is just a fancy word for avoiding anxiety.

Focusing on your tasks makes you anxious. Doing something else distracts you from the anxiety and you feel better. So you teach your brain to interrupt your focus because you keep rewarding it.

The solution is to stop rewarding your brain for distractions.

Remove the distractions. Unplug the Internet/cable modem. Take the battery out of your phone.

When you find yourself reaching for a distraction, try deep breathing instead and break your task down into smaller parts and complete one of those smaller parts.

ie. Overwhelmed by writing the 1000 words? Break those 1000 words down into logical pieces. Work on your bibliography. Sharpen up your footnotes.
