ok so i got caught shoplifting and i am charged with a class B misdemeanor.

Im 20 years old. Before I continue please spare me your “got whats coming to you” or lecturing comments. It was stupid, i know that…i dont need anyone else reminding me. Anyway I’m not really sure what to do since this is my first offense of anything ever, with the exception of traffic tickets. I don’t know what to expect at my court appearance and i don’t know if i need to hire a lawyer because you can actually go to jail for 6 m. for a class b. Or because its my first offense if they will just give me a probation and a fine. Any advice or information will help. I live in utah btw.

Always, always, always get a lawyer. You’re an adult, you should have a lawyer you go to regularly anyway.

i feel a little foolish, but how exactly would one go about finding a lawyer. I mean sure there is the internet or the phone book. But i don’t really know where to start.

If you’re broke, go to your public defender’s office. Otherwise its just a matter of finding one in the yellow pages that you can afford. Since you’re already in trouble make sure you ask some questions, make sure you’re comfortable with the idea that he’ll be able to serve your best interests without bankrupting you.

Again, always, always, always have a lawyer. Unless you’ve passed the bar, a lawyer will get you a better arrangement than you ever could. Definitely don’t ever plead no contest. Don’t even make a plea without a lawyer.
