Trying to Remember a Christmas Story

Can anyone recall a Christmas book about the North Pole in which elves are making Santa a surprise porridge that contains one single walnut or almond? Someone very dear to me needs this book as a gift for her sister, but we have not been able to find out the title and author. Would greatly appreciate any help.

A Christmas Carol?

That’s the only one I know.

No, sorry, Yeti. A Christmas Carol takes place in Victorian London; the story I am trying to think of takes place in Santa’s workshop at the North Pole. I appreciate the suggestion, though.

A particular tradition that is often associated with eating rice pudding or porridge in the Christmas time is hiding a whole almond in the porridge. In Sweden and Finland, popular belief has it that the one who eats the almond will be married the following year, whereas in Norway, Denmark and Iceland the one who finds it will get a prize, the almond present. In Denmark and Norway the almond tradition is usually done with Ris á l’amande served as dessert at Julefrokost (Christmas lunch) or on Christmas Eve, while in Sweden and Finland it is more commonly done with a rice porridge dinner, sometimes a few days before Christmas Eve.

It is called “Carpenter Andersen”.

I love knowing that! Whether I find the book or not, perhaps I’ll make a Christmas porridge with an almond this year. Thank you so much for sharing that lore with me, Elderly Yeti.

Good idea. Or better yet, put 4 almonds in the porridge!

Yeah, almond porridge. Or wait, forget the porridge, let’s all just eat almonds and get married in a year! I know I would love that.

Hi! My daughter-in-law-elect (also Katie!) never did find the story she was looking for. But there’s always NEXT Christmas, in case anyone sees this and remembers the book!

Thanks

I think I’m searching for the same book! My grandmother used to have this in her cabinet and my sister and I can’t find it anywhere (or remember what it’s called/who it’s by). Here are the details I recall:

- Story was about Santa, Mrs. Claus and all their helpers preparing for Christmas. . .
- I think there’s a dinner scene where Santa and his crew are eating porridge at this long-table in a dining hall celebratory setting– and waiting to see who is served the bowl with the winning nut (or rock or - something that was dropped into the porridge). I think Santa got the nut.
- I recall a few “workshop” illustrations of elves busy at work making crafts out of wood with their hands

I found my book, not sure if this is the one you are referencing:

Santa Claus and his Elves by Mauri Kunnas
