There are 6 sides to a cube, and each side has an area defined as Length * Width. Since the lengths and widths on a perfect cube are equal, each area is defined as a^2. Therefore:

54 ft. = 6a^2

54 ft. = 6a^2 Divide both sides by 6
9 ft. = a^2 Take the square root of both sides
3 ft. = a Answer
