college help: My situation is very odd and I am stumped as to what to do. - Help.com

My situation is very odd and I am stumped as to what to do.

I am 27 years old and will be earning a bachelor’s degree in May after attending college since 2000. It took me so long to reach this point, because I took some time off, not being sure I wanted my major. But that’s another story altogether. My most pressing situation, now, is that I will need to start working as quickly as possible after graduation, and I will need to move out of the area in which I am currently living. What is the best way for me to find work immediately after college, even if it’s somewhere far away, where I can start working immediately for pay? Who do I contact, what calls do I make? I know that it depends on my chosen profession, but all professions are pretty much the same, I think, when it comes to having the right timing and contacts.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated! I really have no clue as to how to embark on this journey.

What is your chosen profession? It does matter as to the advice you may receive.

I’m actually embarrassed to say what it is, because it is so obsolete and I only majored in it because I didn’t think I would be good at anything else. Let’s just say it’s academic, in the humanities field. All I’d like to know is how I’d go about finding contacts out-of-state, who can help me to find an immediately paying job after graduation. Or even if such a thing is possible.

Just whisper in our ear what your field is. We won’t tell.

In our state you would try like idaho.gov and this takes you to a site which you could search for jobs from. Most states have a job search tool. You may want to ask unemployment offices in some of these places to direct you better. The government sites will want you to register with them, but it is usually pretty simple and can be done over the internet. These government sites often will give you info on the job to cost of living ratios as well. At any rate it is a good place to start.

Hope this helps.

Try talking to a careers advisor at your school.

Well, I can try that stuff, I’m just not sure if my chances are as fair as anyone else’s. Despite being 27, I’ve never had a real job; all my focus has been on school. I don’t know how a total lack of experience at my age will sit with a potential employer, that’s what I’m worried about.

It won’t sit well. So you have to be that much more brilliant.

I wouldn’t say that your chances are less fair…having or not having a real job has been your choice, and if someone is more qualified than you, it is only fair to them that they get hired.

Well it hasn’t necessarily been my choice…I’ve applied for many jobs in the past, simple entry-level ones that should have been easy for me to get into…but I was never hired.

Okay, from my point of view, the best thing you could do is submit your resume to as many places as possible. You might also try those web sites that post jobs wanted and available. They often have a place where you can post your resume free of charge. The hits those sites get are well into the hundred thousands every day.
