Windows XP is inconsistent with previous versions.

I just downloaded Borland’s excellent C++ compiler, and it can only compile files in its own core directory. There ought to be a way to compile in any directory - in previous versions of windows, you simply edited AUTOEXEC.BAT - but now that file doesn’t exist, and I have no idea what to do.

Hopefully, this loads better than the other attempt I made to ask for help.

Of course it does. The file is hidden on your master hard drive (Usually C:) Without autoexec.bat, your computer wouldn’t boot.

Go to “my computer”->C: (or D: or whatever)
In the menu, Tools->Folder Options
In the popup, View Tab->SHOW HIDDEN FILES option.

I don’t believe that’s the case, frattar - my computer is already set to show hidden files, and it is not there. In any case, you seem to be under a misapprehension about what exactly AUTOEXEC.BAT is. It is a file that handles the MS-DOS shell, which records the locations of specific functions which you can activate in that shell and what command to use to activate them without going to the specific directory where they are stored. It has nothing to do with booting, or Windows XP itself.

edit the windows command line if you feel really gutsy.

I unequivocally do NOT feel gutsy about editing windows in any way. Linux, I’d have tried that myself already, but windows - uh-uh.

control panel -> system -> advanced tab -> environmental variables

possibly under “path”
I don’t know the borland compiler that well

Again, that deals with Windows, not with the MS-DOS shell.
