Happy volunteering.
A friend of mine has asked whether I know somethin’ about that, but I haven’t really got anything specific. If you know anything, it would be helpful to them if you could write it down, please.
Even if you don’t know, could you please invite a person/people whom you suspect would know?
1) Do you know anything about volounteering for disaster hit areas, poor places etc?
2) Have you ever done it yourself?
3) Do you know which organizations deal with providing such aid?
4) What would be the best way to approach them?
5) What kind of experience is needed to volunteer?
Thanks,
Yeti.
1. yes i do know
2. no i havnt unless giving money to wear casuals at skl counts.
3. many of them, but not by name :P

They’re searching for a “work” kinda volunteer, rather than donating money. Do you have anything ’bout that?
Thanks.

I’m not sure really, but there are some haiti charity boxes up the street where I live. I could try and find out what charity they are if you want.
and I have a cd, “helping Haita everybody hurts” and on it it says Helping Haiti, Disasters Emergency Committee, working together.
I don’t know if that helps..
Thank you, Jetty.

I looked on the red cross site & it said they aren’t taking volounteers for Haiti, don’t know why.
You should look at the place near you if it’s not too much trouble.
Sorry i don’t really know the answers, i’ve voulnteered with the elderly before, but thats about it. (:
Thanks anyway.

You have to be willing to get dirty. You should be willing to help all age levels and people will all levels of ability/mobility.
2)not in disaster areas (though I really felt compelled to), but in many other situations.
3)unicef, red cross, doctors without borders, world vision, there are likely a zillion others, but I wouldn’t bother to trust most of them.
4)call and say “I have free time on(dates) I’d like to volunteer. My strengths are ____, ___ and _____. Do you have any work available in (location or general area) on those dates?
5) None, in most cases. They are generally greatful for your time and will show you what to do. If you have any training in any area, they can likely find a way o put you (and your skills) to use.
6) no idea. Ask them. If it’s in your own country, you might not need it. Extra insurance might be good, depending on what you will be doiing. Travel insurance in your own country is also good.
You can apply online and note your intrest, it really depends on which fouindation you would like to help, sometimes you need specialist training, eg medic, nurse, paramedic. You can volunteer for things like world vision, oxfam, green peace
If you want to help with natural disasters, you can do a training course on search & rescue, volunteer fire fighting, first aid, Civil defense. In order to get on this track you can contact united nations and register with them.
just do a bit of digging on the internet, start with the major names and foundations here, they will help you and put you in touch with local authorities. I found this out because when the thai/indo tsunami hit, I was brought to tears at the devastation, it really struck a chord with me because I am half thai and have many relatives in thailand.
I hope this info helps, we need more people like yourself.
the most common agencies youll find working in disaster and famine relief are the Red Cross, and the UN, both of which are global organisations you can volunteer for at home or abroad.
World vision is another worldwide one who focus on famine relief and development of poorer areas as opposed to disaster care. Oxfam is another…there really are quite a few, and some may be in your area and some may not.
all of them you can contact through their websites, they have email forms or phone numbers.
if you want to be working in disaster relief, you will need to have some skills. unfortunately, it isnt just as easy as rocking up to the door and saying hey i wanna help.
disaster and famine relief requires people with dynamic skills and abilities, who are able to work without supervision and use their initiative.
medics are always needed, anyone with search and rescue or logistical organisation skills, lawyers..disaster relief is quite specific in the skills needed, whereas famine or refugee relief is more generalised.
you will need a visa in most places, the thing is that a lot of the countries who need help the most, are also very volatile and not necessarily stable governmentally, so visa’s and passports are usually a necessity-that is the advantage of going with an organisation like the red cross or UN, their reputation and contacts mean they can organise those things for you.
they also generally organise travel insurance-this is an absolute must have. it is easy to get sick in sick areas, and it is not easy to get out without insurance.
You could also get them to contact someone like habitat for humanity, who have a lot of programmes running all over the world that you can volunteer for short periods, which will give him experience and some skills to get into the really nasty areas.
it would probably be a good idea to ease into it a little that way, do some shorter trips to some different places and see whereabouts his skills are most helpful.
GoNomad Click on the link It’s independent - not part of any group. It’s considered a vacation alternative. Some locations accept families with children.
You pay your own transportation & a token amount for room & board usually - it varies. Go to the country you want to travel to & look at the details of what’s available. Many locations require no special skills (just the desire to help). There are even a few opportunuties to volunteer here in the US.
Become a member of Red Cross (it’s international so it has a lot of branches). They could also refer you to someone who knows who to call in case you intend to serve outside medical stuff.
I have done a lot of volunteering thing but within my community. I head an organization that encourages implementation of laws to be passed to the congress based on social needs etc ( I am talking about my country’s concerns).
So we accept volunteers. So far we have not accepted anyone from another country as our group is local based focusing on local concerns.

Thank you. This seems like the kind of advice they need, as they’re not quite certain on what to volunteer as (i.e the type of job).
Sorry about your family. Hope none of them got hurt too badly.
Well, not me - this post is on behalf of a friend. I’ll soon be spending my time volunteering at the army involuntarily… ^_^’
Go to the Red Cross and volunteer your services. If you are a person that can truly Help they will send you to disaster areas fast… don’t try to make a living doing it.
although the red cross does actually employ a lot of people for this type of work, so does the UN. jobs are possible…but usually only if you have skills like nursing or translation etc etc

Yes, it seems that most organizations would prefer that you go to their website. it’s better for organizational purposes bc most keep their records on the computer already. Saves them time with respect to writing it all out. (They can copy and past your info into their schedule, as need be.)
You might like to try “Niall Mellon Township Trust”, they have a very interesting site and I’m pretty sure if that particular one isn’t for you … they could point you in the right direction.. good luck with that..
Hi. I know I am late. I spoke about Hurricane Katrina and you commented. I could not respond there, so I am responding here. The “bridge” incident is fact for sure. You weren’t watching the news? I am from Louisiana. I now reside in Texas. I did not make that up. It is true. Look it up if you did not know… I want to hear back from you.
Honestly. Just google ” hurricane katrina bridge.” Please respond on “Conspiracy Theories” post, not 2012… Thanks.

To whom are you responding?
No problem. :)
