my parents are very depressed and this causes me to feel like there is nothing i can do about it.

my parents and i DO NOT have an open, honest relationship. there is serious secrecy in our family and no body talks about our problems. is this something that i should feel bad about? people have told me that “i didnt break them so i cannot fix them” because it is the events in their lives making them upset. but makes me upset to see my family like this and its been like this for 5 years. any advice apprectiated.

you can try talking to them and keep talking to them until you break the ice. If you show vulnerability and acceptance to that eventualy there shields might drop.

This is a tough situation, but I would like to take a shot at it;

I think that the advice you have gotten (you didn’y break them…) is actually only half true. Yes, there are probably issues in your parent’s lives that are adding to their depression, but I think that you may be able to help them muster up the courage to seek help.

Maybe if you initiated a more open honest relationship with them it could be good for them. Talk to them, ask them what is going on in their lives. It may be a pleasant surprise for them to see you taking this step, but it may also be just what they are hoping for.

Not all people are very good at expressing their feelings. I think some people hide true feelings from the ones they are closest to because of fear of what these important people will think of them. Also, if you show them you are willing to listen it will display your love for them, and also maybe make them feel safe (yes, parents sometimes feel unsafe too) and more comfortable talking to you about personal problems in the future. I truly wish you all the best! Please send an update as to how things are going!
