Thought help: My OCD is starting to become a problem. - Help.com

My OCD is starting to become a problem.

I have to turn the light switched on and off a certain way, and if I do it wrong I have to re-do it. I can’t walk normal because my feet have to both touch each surface the same number of steps, and I have to start on each new surface (be it different tile color, carpet to wood, any different surface) I have to start with my right foot or else I have to backtrack. I HATE seeing other people walk because they often step unevenly on a surface. Also, everything has to be symmetrical and even, so I sometimes spend hours in one room perfecting every little detail. And sometimes after a certain number of anything I have to do something with my mouth so that I can stop counting it, but then after I do that I have to start counting it again if it keeps going. I don’t have money to hire professional help, so I thought I’d ask on here.

Anyone else OCD and know how to help?

It’s not fun. And I don’t know, I’ve looked online but all the sites you have to sign up with a credit card, and my family definitely does NOT have the money for that. I’ve never been to a free clinic, not sure if there even is one around here =P

I don’t know much about OCD, but have you read any books on how to overcome your obsessions?

Not really. There’s one tv show that shows people trying to stop their OCD but all they do is don’t do what they want, and I don’t think I have enough self-control to do that on my own, and I don’t wanna tell my friends or family to help me, ’cause I’m not big on the idea of telling people about it.

Ok, what I did to help, was way over do it one day, kinda force the problems on. Like make the whole day to your OCD. Keep doing it till it just gets so annoying that either your about to kill yourself or your mind snaps for a month or two… thats what I do anyway. And I’m serious, not a joke…

Yeah, I can see how that could be difficult. I have a couple of small obsessions myself, and I don’t think I’d be able to overcome them. I couldn’t even begin to fathom how difficult it would be to overcome something big like yours.
I’m the same way, btw. I don’t like talking to people about my troubles, but sometimes it’s the best option.

I knew you were serious =P I’ll try, but I’m afraid that if I do that it’ll become normal to be even more obsessive about it, but I will try.

Well also I feel like if I tell people about my problems they’ll judge me or get angry at me for complaining or something.

hey frnd, i also used to have OCD, i never went to a professional but because i am a medical student so i knew that my compulsive acts were signs of it. i used to have fear that if i don’t do this or that right now then something wrong will happen, or mostly the fear was related to God that if i don’t do this right know God will punish me or won’t love me….u know everyone has fears behind doing the compulsive acts no matter what the fears are but they r always on the mind. well i suffered from it so much but i slowly realized that what i’m doing means nothing to God and his love is the same for everyone, as the sun shines equally on the gud n the bad. i slowly started to ignore the stupid irrational fears….i hated my life so much as i felt that i shud not marry anyone cuz of what i do, but with Lord’s strength as i needed the psychotherapy related to my fears so i understood Lord’s love better and i resisted myself from doing and repeated the stupid stuff which means nothing and trust me dear nothing wrong happens if we don’t do it….it makes no difference in what happens in our life but just destroys our personality. now i am way much better, and i hope within few time i will forget that i even used to do the meaning less acts that benefited me nothing….IT”S ONLY THE FEAR BEHIND THE ACTS THAT COMPELS US TO DO IT OTHERWISE WE FEEL SOMETHING WRONG WILL HAPPEN, but as i said nothing wrong happens. trust me trust urself, what u have to do is u have to teach urself thr right and have to make urself strong , everyday will then make a difference in ur life. i’m always here to talk to u or any help u need.

and 1 thing more i have talked to some ppl regarding this n a lot of ppl have these tiny acts but they finish it so soon before they become a problem, so what i mean is that the fear level shud be within limits anything below or above creates the problem.
balance is important for anything.

THANK YOU FOR TRANSLATING!!! And that sounds painful. I used to slap myself in the face if I said something wrong around people. I would think about it over and over and once I got home I’d slap myself. I stopped when my face started bruising… =/

well as u say u don’t know why u do it, it is an obsession normally ppl do have fear behind it as if something wrong will happen….
it’s just a negative force pushing u to do it, u have to control the negative force as it is worth nothing.

Most people with obsessive-compulsive disorder fall into one of the following categories:

Washers are afraid of contamination. They usually have cleaning or hand-washing compulsions.
Checkers repeatedly check things (oven turned off, door locked, etc.) that they associate with harm or danger.
Doubters and sinners are afraid that if everything isn’t perfect or done just right something terrible will happen or they will be punished.
Counters and arrangers are obsessed with order and symmetry. They may have superstitions about certain numbers, colors, or arrangements.
Hoarders fear that something bad will happen if they throw anything away. They compulsively hoard things that they don’t need or use.

do u find any point associated with u?

A little of everything actually. Washer: I wash my hands after I touch anything not mine, but I don’t see that as too much of a problem. Checker: I make sure I have my most valuable things with me at all times in case the house burns down, and I always lock the doors even though I live in a perfectly safe neighborhood, but that’s just a safe precaution, no big deal. Doubter/Sinner: I always have to do certain little things just right. Counter/Arranger: I count everything, including number of steps I take and to calm myself down I have a counter in my head that is at 27,000 right now, and I won’t let anything be numbered any number divisible by 12. Hoarder: I keep all little things because I don’t want to lose the memories they carry with them. I keep all my pop can tops in a plastic bag in my room.
