Family help: Im going to set a date to quit smoking. - Help.com

Im going to set a date to quit smoking.

From everything Ive read about quiting smoking its good to tell family, friends, and coworkers. When you feel week, and want to give in and have that smoke…..Its hard to let down the others you’ve told you were quitting. Also, its a good idea to not quit alone. If anyone cares to join me…..Lets be here for each other!

I actually quit smoking 4 years ago this month. The first couple of weeks were the hardest to get through. But one day I didn’t have the urge to smoke and when I passed by someone who was smoking, I actually wanted to throw up just from the smell. Nowadays, I try to avoid walking near smokers because I still get sick from the smell. Stay strong and you’ll get through it.

I got off a 6 hour flight and went to get a smoke. When I went outside, I had a similar reaction. I considered it a sign!

Hi,

I have smoked for 18 years and quit almost 3 years ago cold turkey. It was not as hard as I thought it was.
I am very proud of myself and have not had one time where I wanted to start again.

well, i smoke like a freight trian, cold turkey isnt really the thing for me… but i’ve gone from almost a pack and a half to about half a pack in the last couple weeks… (kinda an unspoken new year’s resolution i guess)
one thing that helped me is to buy the ‘nasty’ brands or ones that taste bad to me (i smoked menthol, so it isnt hard to find bad-tasting cancer sticks) and that has helped ALOT…. doc says i gotta quit, and i will, i just gonna wing myself off gradually… if i could afford it, there is a new $300-$400 shot that is said to take away the physical craving (or niccing) and i have a freind who swears by it… but i think i’ll try the free method before i fall back on paying for it…
good luck animal…

YOU CAAAAAN DOOOOOOOOOO IIIIITTTTTTT!!!!!!!!

Boyz, I’ve been that route before. Cutting down I mean. It generaly works for a short time, but it usually goes right back to what it was. (stress related mostly) I believe cold turkey is the way to go. My doc says that you just have to face the withdrawals, they are temporary. Quitting smoking in the past, I learned that it does increase your energy, and your appetite. So I did this whole work out routine that was awesome! I ate right and worked out. It really helped with the cravings. Either way, the first three days were the worst.

lol anthrax doesn’t sound like he wants to quit ^^

You took a good decision there animal!
I quit smoking not that long ago and I didn’t give into temptation yet.
I’m really trying hard but I won’t give up =)
I’m determined to quit!
Let’s do it animal!
I found some tricks to quit.
Each time I feel like smoking I Do something else, like brush my teeth, drink water, look at the window… random stuff, anything that will take my mind off it until the temptation’s gone.
And each day I go without smoking I put 1£ in a box.
So that once I’m really over it I’ll be rich ^^
lol I already have around 500£ in that box…

May your determination always make you successful.

I am having the same battle, not quite ready to make the commitment with you at this time.

Have you heard about the shot ?
My brother-in-law had the shot, he was a 25 + year heavy smoker and he has quit.

Strange thing about that shot, he had to travel from Salem, VA to Raleigh, NC. Going dead into Tobacco Country to get this shot, sounds a bit fishy to me.

Please keep me posted about your lung capacity increase and energy, taste buds and nose working better.
Also, feel free to lean on me if you have a low day, I’m here for you brother,

My ex-husband used Nicorex gum to help him stop smoking. And it worked for him. He. started chewing the whole pieces of gum and quickly chopped them in half and mixed them (chewed them) with Chiclets or Dentyne.

that way he saved money. Perhaps you can get the nicotine gum in the States on a government paid prescription. that would be a good route.

Also he did a lot of driving around a big city for his job. To keep his hands busy and to satisfy the oral craving, he ate fresh carrots (actually until his skin turned orange–it really did) and then he switched to sunflower seeds. Anyone looking in his van would have thought it was owned by a parrot.

However, a guy has to do what it takes to get rid of bad habit like smoking, and I believe you do what you need to until it’s done. the best book I read on addictions was called “Addiction and Grace” by
Gerald Mayes. It’s an older book (about mid 80’s); perhaps you might find a copy in the library.

Congratulations on your determination! You’ve got a lot of friends here to cheer you on.
Blessings.

Quitting smoking was hard to do, but I’m so glad I quit. After getting severe bronchitis and strep throat for the third time, not to mention all the colds and flues in between, I thought I was going to die! I quit cold turkey and have not looked back since. The best part is I got my health back, I did gain a little weight tho, he he

Maybe by grossing you out a little we can persuade you to quit, he he

You can wait like P did. wait until you need 4 angioplasties. Wait till you need beta blockers, blood thinners and cholesterol medicines. After the last angioplasty P woke up in the hospital a non smoker. It was the easiest thing he ever did. Still carries his Zippo around with him (sometimes without fluid though). We are praying for your release from this very tough addiction. May you be successful

I QUIT TOMORROW!

Join me, anyone….PLEASE!

I cant sleep on my back because the mucus runs down my throat and feels like its going to choke me.

The skin on my face and shoulder get blemishes from the smoke.

I dont ever eat. Smoking acts as a appetite suppresant. I mostly light up rather than get food. So Im a little under weight and under nurished.

I feel like I have all the energy in the world! But Im too lazy to get up and do something. I light up instead.

I wait longer for a table in a restraunt because of smoking.

Kev! Keep up the pep talk! Its working! No I didnt smoke in BCT. I had chances to, but declined them. Reading your post, I swear I could hear the voice of a Drill Sargeant! It was a cool effect to words on a screen!

Papa Bear, Its going to sound wierd, but the last time I quit it was for 9 months. I didnt notice any difference in my taste buds. The only difference in smell I had attained was an extreme sensitivity towards smoke. The Appetite did hit in full force though.

Oh yeah….Kev. In order to quit, Im actually going to be going on a workout plan. Its hard to have a craving after 20 pushups! Its one thing Im going to use to fight the cravings also. If a craving hits me that hard, I’ll drop and give YOU 20! Hooaahh! :-)

Funny story about the last time I quit. I had coworkers that would constantly push me to fail in quitting smoking. (I guess they felt as if they couldnt do it, no one else should either) One guy in particular thought it was histerical to always offer me a cigarette. I would say no, He would laugh and say, “Thats OK, Im here when you break. You cant do this” God he pissed me OFF! So one day, Im taking an “air” break and he starts in on me. I was having a bad night. I accepted the cigarette from him. He got out his lighter and went to light the smoke for me. I took it out of my mouth and broke it in half before he could light it. (It was intentional from the begining for me) He yells at me! “What did you do that for? That was messed up! I could have smoked that!” I responded with “No man, it was mine. You offered it to me, I accepted. It was no longer your property. Once its in my possession, I can do with it as I please. Every time you offer a smoke, I will accept it, then I will throw it away.” He got mad, yelled some obscenities at me, BUT NEVER OFFERED ME ANOTHER SMOKE!

Victory will be mine!

Animal, this is C. I hear you and am sharing the same journey right now. After watching P in the hospital with the 2 heart attacks in 5 days, and the cardiologist walking in and telling him if you ever have another puff on a cigarette you will die, I knew I, at the very least, could never smoke around him again because I love him and want to keep him around for a while. I was smoking two packs a day at that time. I made a decision to quit and it failed because I get tremendous physical withdrawal symptoms. For the past 10 weeks I have managed to keep at 8-10 cigs a day outside in the cold breaking all habits that go with it. Try giving yourself permission to smoke X amount per day while you break the habits and psychological comfort zone (?) we associate with the nasty habit. Don’t hold it unless you are taking a drag, don’t smoke immediately following or during meals, have coffee in the morning and don’t smoke with the coffee. Don’t smoke in your house or car. In other words make it as uncomfortable for yourself as you can. Think any of this could help you? Are you still bartending?

Animal, glad to hear that you are trying. The advice C is giving you is good I tried that on one of my many attempts to quit, and it helped. breaking the associations is one of big parts of kicking the habit. My big association was beer, it was tough to not light up when I was drinking. I have one more inconvenience to add, roll your own smokes but don’t pre roll them only roll one when you need one, that will help you cut down your consumption.
:]

Bill, I would recommend cutting back instead off quitting out flat. I think it would be easier for you. First, STOP smoking in your car and the house. Make sure Keri stops smoking in the car at least while she’s w/ you and she’s gotta stop in the house too. Is she trying to quit w/ you? It’ll be easier if you both are. Once you’ve stopped smoking in those 2 areas, let me know. Thta means no smoking while getting ready for work in the morning in the house or on your way. If you’re running late, you’ll just have to smoke once you get there or give yourself enough time to smoke before you jump in the car. I’m sure I’ll get jumped on this one by saying don’t quit cold turkey but that doesn’t work for everyone.

Update! Yesterday broke me. Im not going to make a ton of excuses. All I can say is that going from 1.5 to 2 packs a day to nothing brought me to the point where I was shaking, I couldnt direct my thoughts towards anyting positive. And I almost told off one of my customers. I smoked 6 cigarettes yesterday.

I HAVE NOT GIVEN UP! I just wanted to be honest with everyone. I wanted to be strong enough to go cold turkey! I feel horrible that Im not able to do that so far. (I appologize Kev)

I spoke with my doctor, He prescibed me Chantix. Its expensive, and my insurance doesnt cover it. But Im working an extra shift tonight so I can go pick it up tomorrow.

I WILL SUCCEED! I WILL BREAK THIS HABIT!

Hi animal: it makes more than good sense to cut down to two or three smokes a day before going ‘cold turkey’. Please read my post above of how my husband quit–nicotine gum really helped him over the rough spots.
He was free in three months and we were still able to live with him.

Don’t bury yourself in condemnation–maybe start today to prepare yourself for permanently quiting.

You’ll make it!

Papa Bear, Gum does help with cravings. Problem is I also have TMJ. After a while, it just hurts too much to chew. Again not looking for excuses, just different solutions.

Holly, I had read your previous post. It came through at a time I needed it the most! :-) The biggest problem with a nicotine addiction is that when someone does give in to the cravings, they feel as though they have failed. That they cant do it. (As I felt) Its not true. Its just a minor set back. Im going the route of the nicotine receptor inhibitor (chantix)

Animal, I just had to rub your face in this. A few years ago, we were sitting in a coffee shop at 3 in the morning. Alchohol in our blood from the bar earlier, coffee in my mouth and a haze of smoke in the air that was hard to see through. “It’s easy to quit smoking. I’ve done it a 100 times.” Who was that?

im only seventeen and ive quit smoking probably about a million times, i think that you should just outright stop, because if you really want to quit, then you will, you will make that mental decision, and your mind is more powerful than you think. i havnt smoked in three months (and thats a long time for me) so just try that out. dont set a date, just do it.

and by the way man, just so you know, i feel the best things in life are the ones you have to work to get, and quitting smoking, is hard work, and to keep from smoking, is hard too, but its worth it. you live longer, and i dont plan to have kids, but i do have family members and friends that will (and some have) kids, that i want to see grow up and succeed, smoking doesnt help with that.

Hello! I’m 36 male.. I HAVE BEEN SMOKING SINCE I WAS 14 YEARS OLD.. I have been smoke free since DECEMBER 8 2006. I told my kids and myself that I was going to quit at 35, My birthday was in January. .. Took me the whole year before I did it… It has been rough at times. All my siblings smoke as well as my father. They smoke in front of me but I tell myself no… Then you have people at work that smoke on thier breaks and man do they smell when they come in… When you smoke you don’t smell the cigarette. I go bowling every week and people smoke. When I leave there My clothing reek bad of smoke… Every where you go you are bomarded with smokers…
My point is FOR you have fight through the urges… FOR YOUR KIDS AND YOURSELF… SO YOU CAN LIVE A LONGER LIFE… YOUR KIDS OR FAMILY DON’T WANT YOU TO DIE…. YOU PROBABLY WILL GAIN WEIGHT…I gained 13 lbs. before I got out of the habit of eating.. now losing weight.. Eat carrots, celery something healthy….. drink more water.. I quit 2 habits actually. smoking and pop… the most hardest things to get off from… I’m no roll model… I give up on things that get to hard to handle.. But not this time… Please fight through it all…Excerise when possible…

I hate admitting it, but the withdrawals cold turkey are too much. Maybe if I was able to admit myself for a few days in a padded room, I could do it. I do understand that as long as the ultimate goal is reached, it truly doesnt matter how I got there, just that I get there and not make excuses on the way!

Bill, Do more than 1 day before cutting down. Say maybe 1 a week or every 3 days. If that doesn’t work then I’m taking my leave and I’m coming over there like your DS. The journey will be long and hard, but when you make it - you’ll be damn proud of yourself. Keep your head up soldier. Good luck :)

It’s more of a mental struggle rather than physical when you attempt to quit smoking. Best of luck too!
