Mac vs Alienware

MacBook Pro vs. Alienware M17x

I still have a lot of time to decide, but these were the two choices I was thinking about for a college laptop (graduating in 2011). I will be going into a art related field probably involving Graphic Design or some form of computer art.
I know Alienware is a PC and these fields are most typically Mac dominated, but I know not everyone has the money to shell out on a new Mac. I was deciding between the two since they are close in price and since I prefer to buy something that’ll last a while (if all goes well, it is a machine; I am very careful and take really good care of my belongings).
Just tell me your views. I am willing to upgrade components if you want to get technical.

lets see:

Macbook pro

Hardware: Mid class intel processor, minimal RAM, chipset graphics, proprietary operating system

Aesthetics: Silver and square, as always

Alienware:

cutting edge CPU, loads of memory, Nvida graphics, Creative sound processor.
stylish and cool looking
runs any operating system you want, Linux would be the best

True, but this needs to be compatible with my field of study too.

It is so sad to see that macintosh has such a tight grip over certain markets–art design, journalism–for little reason, and with such crappy overpriced computers to boot.
