Relationships help: Hello, I have some questions regarding the novel “What Dreams May Come” by Richard Matheson. - Help.com

Hello, I have some questions regarding the novel “What Dreams May Come” by Richard Matheson.

I was affected by it. It is baised for the most part on research done by the author. This makes it a very weighted novel. It addresses beliefs in a unique way, and I was affected by it very much.I was sort of confused as I’ve always been at the concept of reincarnation. I think that the relationships that a person makes on earth and the memories he makes shouldn’t be forgotten. I was left sort of dissapointed at the suggestion that I will forget my family, the relationships and memories I make here on earth will be gone after I begin a new life. I was especially angry at the ending because after the main character searches through the depths of Hell for his soulmate and convinces her that he is her one true love despite constant demoralizing and crippling resistance, he never sees her and is then informed that he must be reincarnated. He will then lose all memory of these trials along with the life he has just passed from. A life where he and his wife lived in a state of total happiness with each other. Even though he had found her, his soulmate. Reincarnation is explained in the book as a cycle of lives that create a path where the ultimate destination is total oneness with god. A state of perfecion of the soul. I believe that since he found his soulmate then hasnt he reached that destination. She would, through her love remove any sense of worry or badness from him wouldn’t she. For him to have to forget her… well I just don’t understand. So I came here to Help.com. Someone please help me. I was very affected by this novel.

I have not heard of this novel. Is it based from the beliefs of christianity? I remember a sermon I heard many years ago where the minister spoke of similar things. Those who went to heaven would not remember their spouses or loved ones. We would become new beings after our death and the second coming of Christ.

No. Well in a sense. It is fiction. It draws from research, however. The idea is that each religion is right in its own way, and also wrong. They all have pieces of the puzzle.

It must be well written to affect you the way it did. You have to remember it was fiction.

It is realistic, and based very much on belief systems that actually exist. You should read it.

I haven’t read the book, but I saw the movie (not sure if they correlate well with each other). What I can offer to you is this: although it is based on research, it is still, as said, fiction. It is one man’s interpretation of research and his view. Each author has an axe to grind, and apparently his axe split a couple of your hairs (bad expression, I know). If you want, I can find for you the proper bible verses about heaven, but I also am having my difficulties with not having fully interpretted how heaven is going to be. I am still sort of un easy about the idea that we will not really know one another or our past relationships as many religions teach it. But do not be afraid. I once heard many years ago, the purpose of life is not to get the most toys. Life is merely the time in which to prepare for eternal life. But if you want to do you own research and make your own conclusions, I’d say pick up a copy of the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth (a.k.a. the BIBLE) and read it for yourself. P.S. Start witht the new testament and get an easy to read version, like The Message or The Christian Standard Bible. If you start with the old testament you will be easily frustrated and confused lol…
