spooldr.sys

hey, wonder if anyone can figure this one out :-P
my computer is having problems loading up as on many occasions now it has loaded windows, but only upto a point where one of two possible popups appear, i’ll post them next time i see them, but as soon as i click ok (the only button) then the entire computer fully reboots itself and when i do finally log onto microsoft windows it says the system has recovered from a serious error, and the feedback i get is that it was caused by spooldr.sys, now i’ve searched the entire computer, i do not have this file, what else could it be? how can i resolve this?

spool is usually something to do with a printer. If you do not have a printer, I will do the best I can to explain a possible method for stopping this error.

the only printer in the house is connected to this computer via a network, there aren’t any physical connections between this computer and a printer

Well that doesn’t mean it still cant be a problem. But either way, have you tried a restore point?

not quite sure where to restore to, heh.. ^^;
it’s been going on for a while but i actually can’t remember when it started

if it makes a difference, i think all of the popups are titled “lsass.exe”
got one this time round which simply said “the requested operation was unsuccessful”

it’s the first time i’ve seen this one as the messages are usually longer…

“lsass.exe” is the Local Security Authentication Server. It is a normal part of your computer.

Found this too, seems I was wrong, it is a virus:

Reboot computer in Safe Mode without networking
Delete the following files:
C:\Windows\spooldr.exe,
C:\Windows\system32\spooldr.sys
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\spooldr.sys
Restart computer normally

the only file i could find in the list above was spooldr.exe in the system32 folder, other than that there were none, so far so good though, although having said that when i loaded the computer fully to first look at this message it didn’t bring up the message, i didn’t seem to get it quite as bad as others did, mine’s just intermittent, although hopefully it’s done the trick, no nasty surprises just yet =]

well, admittedly the deletion of that file looks to have solved the issue, i’ve not had any startup problems yet (touch-wood) however the connection to my printer is now lost, and I have no way to install one any more, grr…
