What has happened to people using words?

It seems all I see people use anymore (on line of course) are acronyms. I will admit I am not completely innocent, I use them myself too. But when people start typing “im” to say “I miss” or “imho” for “in my honest opinion” it really starts to irritate me. Are people really that lazy that they can’t type anymore? I remember, as I am sure many of you also do, when we had to write using a piece of paper and a pen or pencil and if you wrote things like “imho” or even “btw” people would have no idea what you were saying and you would look like an idiot. Anyway, I am not saying we should not use them at all I am just saying we shouldn’t overuse them.

This is a friendly message from a member of the AAAAA (American Association Against Acronym Abuse.) :)

I love it, and I shall mention the AAAAA in chat whenever it seems applicable. ;D

You think the web is bad for chat speak? (And oh yes, it is.) Have you tried an MMO? XD

There is a definite tendency towards using such acronyms, imho ;)
Though I normally fight against the idea except in casual conversations with friends. For it is a lesser method for communicating.

Great post Puck, I agree with you on the lazy thing, I mean how hard it is to use words in there full intended way, I understand lol and use it and a few others sometimes. I do not think it should be a replacement for the actual language which in my opinion is beautiful and requires very little effort to achieve.

Thanks! Yea, it has gotten to the point where people shorten words that don’t need shortening. That has become dat, what has become wut, to has just become the number 2; I think as far as spelling and grammar is concerned computers have actually made people stupider. Before computers people actually had to look words up in a dictionary and write things out longhand. But now that computers have come out we have spell check checking our spelling for us when we deem it necessary (not that it is always accurate), we have the internet where shorthand is not only expected but almost encouraged, and people have quit relying on dictionaries and encyclopedias because they have come to rely so much on the internet for all data gathering needs. While I admit the internet is great for obtaining new and fascinating information on some subjects, there are just somethings that books are better for and the dictionary is one of those things!

Agreed, I would like to see the world try to operate from the way it did even 30 years ago, people would not know what to do with themselves without cell phones and like you said the convenience of not having to actually work to hard at putting together sentences and making some kind of sense.
I love words personally, I was actually collecting them in a book like little shells from the sea, they washed up and I kept them to look at later on. Sounds a little nerdy but I happen to be a bit of a word nerd I suppose, not to much just for my own interest.
Anyways language should not be lost to convenience it can return to grunts and primal screams soon enough for the laziest of us…but I hope to not..

Funny you say that. I was shouting Cobweb today about this very subject and she said Ancient Hebrew didn’t have any consonants so as to make it easier to engrave their words. Sound a little familiar? But I think it is cool you collect words. I have always been a lover of words. I would rather play a game of Scrabble than I would Battleship or Monopoly.

Since my mind doesn’t think using words like ‘dat’ or ‘dose’ or ‘w/e’ it would take me longer to have to type things out that way.

The people who claim the above makes them 1337… leet… ELITE have my pity. It’s another way people try to make an exclusive group for doing something that in of itself makes little sense for the joy of having people not understand them. Which always brings this to mind:

It’s fun at times, but people take it too far.

Dark Snow your humor is right in line with mine.. hehe I love your pretend language usage, it is so cathartic, I mean why not start our own world and live in it like no one else matters.
We can call food garbage, cars can be called roofs, men can be called dogs, and women can be called cats, we shall all lift our legs like to pee when greeting on the streets. There will be no need to work any longer, and we just will float by each other in our bubbles laughing at all the idiots who still live like they do, not getting us and our special lives.
We would not be limited just vertically challenged, our minds flattened out from all the rest we have gotten from not having to carry the burden of the heavy language we used to speak.

If you want to understand the true value of acronyms, get a job at Intel of IBM. Without acronyms a statement could last three or four times longer and be much more difficult to understand.

The overuse of acronyms is just another facet of the continual degradation, and ineptitude of language usage. It also can be seen to be representative of ever increasing laziness. Why not just go back to grunts, groans, and gestures. Oh wait, gestures require more work than typing.

blame it all on a little IP over radio technology created in the mid 90’s known as the SMS.
i suppose back when phones still had numeric pads ovr use of acronyms would be somewhat acceptable. but it’s really sad since they have qwerty keyboards now.
