college help: I am 27 years old and way over my head with student loans. - Help.com

I am 27 years old and way over my head with student loans.

I thought that going to college was the right thing to do, and I’m glad that I went. I have an education (B.S. in Marine Biology with a minor in Theater) and I experienced a lot of great people and adventures. BUT now I am paying back my loans and they just wont go away. I just had a baby girl (she is 9 months old now) and I want to provide a life for her but I dont know how to get started with this huge debt hanging over my head. How will I ever be able to buy a house for us to live in when I owe over $50,000 and I’ve been paying it back since 2002 when I graduated. SallieMae is evil and must be destoyed. They sucked me into this loan that ended up being private and so can not be consolidated or locked into a low interest rate. Salliemae took advantage of a 17 year old trying to go away to college. Anyway, I need HELP

There is always help. I thought my $7,500 was horrbible (thats what i’ve paid it down to)..anyway I feel your situation. i am a 28 year old with two children who are 9 and 3 and i own a home. Have you tried to go through a private company to help consolidate I did and I actually can say that it helped a lot. Yes Sallie mae will tell you that you can’t consolidate and I tried for years until I finally found a company that would help. my average monthly payment is 150.00 and is based on your income. I figure I will be old and gray by the time it’s paid off but the education was well worth it. I have a great job I love and sometimes i have to sacrafice to pay Sallie, but just do a little research on the net, you will be surprised at what you find!!!

Im not sure if you qualify for a deferment program, but you might want to look into that.

I am in the same spot. My loans are part sallie mae, and the other part is Missouri Educational Loans. They are reputable, but it seems that the unsubsidized portion of the loans started out at low interest and it has gone up like crazy. My actual monthly payment is about 550 or so. I dont know what to do! Will I ever get these paid off? I have children who will be going to college in the next 3-4 years too!
