im a 21 year old gay student. all of my life i have been gay. but now i get no respect. why are people like that?

How other people treat you is of no matter. If they want to be disrespectful to you because of your sexual orientation is their choice and you have no control over that.

How YOU treat others is something that you can control. Hold your head high and give them the respect you would want for yourself. On down the road they might just change their minds about gay people.
We can’t control others. We can only control ourselves. I hope and pray that people will start to see the kind and gentle person you are. Peace, my friend.

Hello friend:
I feel sad that you encounter people like that, but such is the world. You will not (nor ever) make everyone happy, nor everyone respect you. What is important is that YOU are happy and that you have respect for yourself. Re-read southern comfort’s advice, because this is the reality of our relationships with the rest of the world: We have no control over what others feel (or say) about us, but we have control over our own feelings.
Still, there are many people out there who will respect and love you for who you are. Seek them out and leave those who don’t behind.
