Can sleeping make you lose weight?

Here’s my theory, if you sleep, I won’t eat. When I’m hungry I sleep. I need to be at 100 pounds or I’ll be unhappy. Can sleeping make me lose weight?

I think you need to just go to the gym or not sleep all day cause its nto good to starve yourself. If you use a small plate when you eat that helps too!!

Hi,
I can answer your question.
Your theory is absolutely wrong.
First I will explain about sleeping, then I will explain the connection between eating less and losing weight.
There are a lot of factors that change in your body while you sleep, and everyone is differet from everyone else.
When you sleep, it is then the most efficient time for the body to replace dead and damaged cells, so your body does work and burn energy while doing so. But, your metabolism slows down together with your heartrate and your breathing, so that would reduce your energy consumption, also your body doesn’t move and do work. 80% of the body’s internal heat comes from moving during the day. But at night your body temperature goes down because your muscles are not doing enough work, and so you burn less calories.
Basically, sleeping should defenetely not be your main plan to lose weight!
COMMON MISTAKE: “Eating less makes you lose weight!” This is absolutely not true, and you have the proof for that in everyone. Lots of people eat so little, they mihght lose weight at first but then get it back on shortly afterwards and stil eat less and get fatter. Some people are very thin and they eat everything and stay thin. How does that happen?
Basically, if you eat less, your body senses that there is not enough food coming in to use for energy, so you migh lose a little at first but when you body goes into “Starvation Mode” it will tend to store even the healthy food that you eat as fat because it is an act of survival, so you gain the weight back again. Starvation is not a good way to lose weight. People who eat a lot might gain some weight at first, but their bodies will get used to having lots of food and energy coming in and start removing allthe stored fat, and so they don’t get larger, until they eat more than a certain limit in which the body cannot burn fat as fast and they will become fat.
Most diets don’t work because they starve the muscles. They tell you to eat a certain quantity and not to eat specific types of food, but then you would deprive yourself from important ingredients and you will not get the right quantities of vitamins and proteins to live a healthy lifestyle.
The correct way to lose weightis through good nutrition, so that yo uget all the correct ingredients forthe body to work properly at the correct quantities, but starve the fat so that your body will still get the food, it will not go to starvation mode and it will burn the fat and it wil keep it off permanently.
Don’t go for the low fat and 0% fat junk that they sell at the stores. For example, the completely non-fat milk. Some vitamins are fat soluble, also you need a healthy fat intake to provide energy for your body to lose weight, and at the same time, lots of processing that is used toremove the fat is not healthy for you. So I would recommend the 2% fat milk instead.
So many 0% fat foods don’t fill you up because they are low on fibre, so you eat more of them, and they give you more carbohydrates which your body tuns into fat and stores it, so you do get the fat and you become unhealthy. Strive for foods that have more fibre grams than fat grams, this way you eat less food and it keeps you full for longer.
Good nutrition is the best and the only way to lose weight safely and keep it off by staying healthy.
You said you want to be 100 pounds? That is pretty light! Being extra thin also has health hazards. If you want to check if you are in the normal weight range, you can go to www.healthmall7.com and enter your weight and height, and it will calculate your body mass index for you according to scientific formulas and it will tell you if you are in the normal range or not.
The best way to lose weight is to eat healthy and have good nutrition. You can read about that in the website above as well.
I hope the information is helpful. Weight loss is a huge topic, and it is serious especially when 1 of every 2 Americans is above the normal weight range where they should be.

Lizzie, sleeping more will definitely not help you lose weight.
I’m also concerned cause I read in one of your other posts that you only ate 2 apples, a banana and oatmeal each day.
The only thing you’re losing with that kind of diet is your health.
You must eat more but diferently.
When you eat less you get headaches, hair loss and you actually have more difficulties losing weight because your body feels you’re starving yourself and because your body is afraid of not having enough food, it stocks fat in prevision.
So the less you eat, the more fat you keep.
See a nutritionist or your doctor, they’ll help you find a healthy diet which will not alter your health.

Lilly, I agree with you. As a matter of fact I am a nutrition coach, and part of an excellent nutrition and weight loss company. I always keep telling everyone to eat well and they will lose weight, but they don’t believe me. I lost 3 inches and 15 pounds overall in 10 weeks by having good nutrition from my company, and I have a lot of energy and I don’t feel hungry. I eat 3 meals and I snack between every meal and the next one.
I wish I can get this message to everyone who thinks that eating less and exercising more makes you lose weight. Yes exercising is good but not enough by itself to lose weight if you don’t eat healthy.
I am a martial artist and I practice a lot of taekwondo. I used to think this way before as well. I wasn’t really that much overweight but I was getting fatter no matter how little I eat and how much I exercise. Exercise is good, I do it for several hours at once.
Everyone thinks they are experts at weight loss and they know what to eat and how much and what not to eat, but why can’t they themselves lose weight and keep it off if they know everything about it!
Well, since you know the secret to healthy living, good luck! :)

Eat more food, and utilize common sense with what you eat. Don’t eat 5 packages of cookies a day. Do eat fruit, vegetables, sandwiches, pasta, meat, etc., but not in supremely large quantities. Drink at least the 8-glass minimum of water over the course of the day (not all at once). Watch your salt intake as it can cause you to retain more water and gain weight.

The trick to losing weight is Exercise. You need to burn off whatever left over energy you receive after eating. Go walking every day; walk to wherever you used to drive; run up and down some stairs a few times; sit on a chair and raise your legs with your feet together out in front of you, hold it, and put them back down. Do this at least 10-20 times every two hours or so; don’t sit around at a computer or watching TV all day. Get up, walk around, do pushups or anything active enough to get your heart going and you’ll be fine.

Consult with a doctor before trying anything strenuous, such as long distance running or any directly committed exercise. A doctor can analyze your position and will give you better tips suited to your body type than we can give online.

I wish sleeping would help, but it does not. Inactivity causes the weight to stay on. You need a healthy diet and a moderate amount of exercise. Start by walking more, cut out all soda pop and all fast food. Eat a balanced diet, three or four times a day, do not eat just once a day. Never eat before going to bed. Keep your portion sizes small. Salads are good, try not to use dressing, just salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon. Fruits are good, eat a variety. Limit your intake of white bread, cakes and cookies. Good Luck
Ps. From the pictures I have seen of you, you don’t need a diet you look great as you are!
:]

Try to eat little amounts of food when you are hungry, just to get the feeling off. Try eating vegetables with lemon and salt (if you like the taste), or drink water when you have already eaten too much and you feel that if you eat more it will make you feel guilty but you need it-water will fill you and you will not be able to eat anymore. I do this awkward thing, and it is horrible, but it makes me stop eating. jeje

As I wrote in my other post, I bought some yogurt and I’m going to start eating that but that just makes me feel like a failure.

My heart doctor hates me, he told me to eat a lot of salt due to my heart problem and I haven’t. I won’t, I don’t even own salt. He says my weight is fine for my height but personally I look big. I’m already dancing and walking everyday so I guess just increasing that or doing it twice a day would work. My father is the same way, it’s just the way I’m built but I hate it. My ribs pop out and my bones on my hips look stupid and my butt is fat. I know I can’t help the way I was born but I want to change what I can, so I can feel good.

Today is a new day for me, I’m going to fast then start a new diet once I’m clean. I’m going to eat less and work my butt off to lose weight. My once a week trip to pizza land is over. I’m already doing really well because I don’t drink soda or eat a lot of sweets. Next time I post a picture I’ll be 100 pounds, that’s my goal so here I go! Wee, yay!

Dear Big HUGE GARGANTUAN Blob-Girl,

Of course I didn’t mean to call you that……

But hey, YOU mean it every time that you’re
talking to yourself, don’t you!

You do just fine on your own with all your negative self-talk, no need for me or anyone else to add to your torturous self-talk.

I would cringe and be incredibly upset and then get absolutely outraged if YOU ever talked to me like that.

BUT YET…..that is EXACTLY how you talk to yourself!!!

According to you, the bones on your hips ‘look stupid’ and your butt is ‘fat’!!!!!

ENOUGH SELF-BASHING! You are a beautiful, caring, involved, thoughtful woman who offers help here AND inspires MANY!!!

I wish you an awesome refreshing sleep tonight….far above and beyond your desire to avoid eating in order to reach a *goal* of 100 lbs.

I understand your wish to sleep and ‘lose weight’. Countless many of us have also wished to sleep and ‘lose the excess weight of problems that pester us, be it actual physical weight or various emotional burdens’.

Um, unless you fall asleep while in auto-drive on top of one of those shopping channel ‘Gazelle’ thingies, there will be no noticeable weight loss while you snooze.

Listen to the previous posts from everyone else who is making much more sense than me, especially the info from yghishan.

Do you know how BEAUTIFUL your e-voice is?
You ROCK!

Please care about yourself as much as you care about other people.

What about me……what if my hips look stupid but I’m reaching out to you. Do my hips matter when it comes to giving a s**t about people? Will what *people* think of my hips really matter in a hundred years…..or will the way I reached out to help someone matter in a hundred years?

And what matters today?
I think you’re awesome because you care about people.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
What if a thousand people said that you were *beautiful* both inside and out.

Would you tell them they were lying?
What if a million people told you you were beautiful both inside and out?

If you would still want to argue after even two people told you you were beautiful, then woman, there is no amount of dieting that can help you. A goal of 100 lbs is okay if you are five foot three or less. Otherwise, you are looking for far more than love, you are looking for something that something that can’t be accomplished in the physical realm because you will never be satisfied with what you see in the mirror.

My tender suggestion to you is that you listen clearly to all the voices that tell you that you’re lovely just the way you are and let those voices count more than the negative ones inside you that insinuate that you won’t be happy unless you’re ‘100′.

Yes it’s good to try to improve ourselves, but not if you absolutely’won’t be happy’ until you’re X or Y or Z.

How are you doing tonight?

That’s how it sounds in my head.

I think my problem lies with myself, I care less what others think of me but when I see myself, I don’t want to see lose skin or fat rolls.

Okay, this past summer I gained major weight and I was at my biggest. I was in a size 10 in juniors and a size 4 in women’s. Right now I’m in a size 4 juniors and a baggy 2 in women’s. I hardly shop women’s unless it’s for a suit but women’s run bigger. I was in a 0 juniors before my kids then I gained and never stopped gaining. I understand I’m not 17 anymore but I would like to be back into a size 2 juniors at least. I’m only two sizes away so what is the big deal.

Since this past summer I have worked my butt off to lose weight, I think I’m starting to notice because I don’t look as puffy. I was chunky, trust me and everyone noticed! Like I said, I don’t care but my fam thought I was depressed or something because I stopped caring and got fat. I care now and I haven’t had much to eat and I’ve been walking longer and more intense.

Oh and how do you get rid of lose skin?

Hey, I know this probably isn’t what you’re looking for but sleep does contribute to weight loss..not through your theory but moreso that lack of sleep can in fact impair your ability to lose weight. So staying healthy and getting enough sleep will help you to lose weight..I can’t find the article I was looking for but here’s one that has some info :)

Queen Elizatron,
You are killing yourself. Please go get help. Your thoughts are scary and NOT normal AT ALL. I was in a similar situation in high school, and I know for a fact if I had continued down that path any longer, I would not be here right now. You are saying you were fat when you wore a women’s size 4. That’s the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. If you’re 12, maybe fitting into a size 4 in women’s would make you bigger than your peers, but you still wouldn’t be fat. But you’re not 12. Please please stop starving yourself, Elizabeth.

Acvtually you need to eat 3 small meals a day and 2 light snacks every three hours. Work out atleast an hour a day, and even with all these, if you do not get adequate sleep. meaning atleast 7-8 hours a day, you will never get tthat six pack. Trust me, I was doing everything for a while but was not losing weight. I made sure I got sound seep everyday and I woke up with less water retention and lost the fat.

Contrary to the advice in this column, the fact is there is a growing body of research that demonstrates consistent 7.5 to 8-hour sleep (where you might be inconsistent and getting less today) WILL improve your weight loss regime. First, you do burn calories when you sleep - anywhere from 50-80 per hour. Second, you are not taking food in during that time and your body is more economical (even healing itself) during that time. Third, you sleep is well known to be linked strongly with stress management, which is also closely linked to weight loss. So yes, changing your sleep patterns can certainly be a critical part of your overall weight loss program.

Here’s some interesting thoughts on the topic:
